The Republic of the Marshall Islands

The Marshall Islands, officially the Republic of the Marshall Islands, is an independent island group in the central Pacific, consisting of some 1,225 atolls and reefs. It was formerly part of the U.S. Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The main atolls are Majuro, the capital, Arno, Ailinglaplap, Jaluit and Kwajalein. The predominantly Micronesian population speaks English, Marshallese, a Malayo-Polynesian tongue, the native language and Japanese. The islands cover an area of 70 sq mi (181 sq km) and have a population of 60,652 (1997). The islands are located mid-way between Australia and Hawaii.
