The Republic of Kiribati
Kiribati, officially the Republic of Kiribati and formerly the Gilbert
Islands, consists of 33 islands scattered across 2,400 mi (3,860 km) of the
Central Pacific Ocean near the equator. A Commonwealth member, the country
is a republic with a president, a cabinet, and a unicameral legislature. The
population which speaks English and Gilbertese, is nearly all Micronesian,
with about a third concentrated on Tarawa, site of the capital, Bairiki.
The islands cover an area of 342 sq mi (886 sq km) and have a population
of 82,449 (1997). The islands are located mid-way between Australia and
Hawaii.
