| Dear Alba,
I was recently told by a friend about something someone else approached them about a long time ago. The other person asked my friend to do something bad and unhonest and my friend ignored them and moved on but I feel that someone higher up like the staff at our school should know what this person asked my friend to do. What do you think I should do? I mean if I go to the staff I know that my friend my be viewed as a tattle tell and I dont' want my friend to get a bad rep like that. And yet I feel that if this other person was say cheating on something in school and got credit for it and others that followed this person got credit for it that they should be punished because it's not fair for other students that do due honest work and go about doing and answering things on their own. Please help. Looking out for a Friend Dear Looking Out For a Friend, First of all, if anyone at this school ever came to anyone on the staff with a problem situation or information that might lead to a problem situation, the staff will NEVER share the identity of that person with anyone except the Administrative Staff (which consists of the Deputies & myself). And being part of that group, I can assure you the information will travel no farther than that. Now, with that said, you don't ever have to worry about your friend looking like a tattle tale or getting a bad rep because they have information about something someone else might be doing or thinking about doing. We don't view anyone who comes to use with issues like this as a tattle tale or think badly about them because we actually appreciate being told when things aren't right. I mean, how else would we know when someone was cheating or doing something wrong if no one tells us? We want Hogwarts to be a fun & fair place for everyone & if someone is doing something that's not on the up & up we should be told about it so we can rectify the situation. Also, once we hear about something, we do investigate it first before we act on it to ensure we have both sides of the story before we decide what actions to take. And the few times we've had to contact members for their actions, we never tell them how we know about it. So, in a nutshell, your friend's identity will remain anonymous if he or she comes forward with whatever information they have. And if they don't want to come forward & you also know the same information, then you can come forward with the knowledge that your identity will not be made known. Hope you & your friend do the right thing! ~Alba |

| Dear Alba,
There's this awesome guy in my House and I really like him and I want to tell him I like him. But I'm sure if I say so the wrong way, he'll hate me!!! Please help me!! Sincerely, BJ Dear BJ, You should never be afraid to tell people how you really feel about them! Who knows, maybe he feels the same way about you & is too afraid to tell you, too! You can be very casual about it like, "Hey, (insert name here). I just wanted to tell you I like you a lot. Hope that doesn't scare you off!" or something like that. I mean, you're not asking the guy to meet you IRL or anything. So, what have you got to lose? The worst thing that could happen is he doesn't talk to you anymore but the best thing that could happen is that he feels the same way as you. So, what are you waiting for? Good luck! ~Alba |

| Superstitions
By Leah Black We've all heard them: don't step on sidewalk cracks, avoid black cats. But just how seriously can we take bad luck superstitions? And how can we be sure to sidestep misfortune? Have you ever been told that breaking mirrors will bring "seven years of bad luck?" This is because ancient people believed that the reflections we saw in mirrors were actually our souls. Thus, if the mirror was broken, the soul would escape. To break the curse, they believed that you had to wait exactly seven hours, pick up the shards, and bury them outside by moonlight. How about the number thirteen? Why is it considered to be so unlucky? An ancient myth states that twelve gods lived peacefully together ruling over the earth until they were joined by a thirteenth, a black-hearted god who sought to destroy them and steal their powers. Nobody believes that anymore, but still we identify the number with misfortune, even to such extremes that many buildings do not have a thirteenth floor. Many ANIMALS, even, have superstitious affiliation. For instance, hearing the hooting of an owl is believed to predict death; killing a sparrow, even by accident, is thought to bring bad luck because sparrows supposedly carry the souls of the deceased; black cats are thought to be the partners of dark witches, and should be avoided at all costs; a bird flying through your house means that you're about to recieve news, and if the bird refuses to leave, it means that the news will be death, as will having a bat in the house. It's also commonly thought that people born on Halloween are able to communicate with spirits, that if you're palm itches, money will be coming your way soon, and that feeling a chill up the spine is a tip-off that someone is walking on your future grave. Be wary of these things this Halloween season! |
