4 Chapter 5
“I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice - not because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother’s death, but because he is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany.” Pg 1 This is the opening sentence in the book, which was wrote by Johnny Wheelwright. This sentence is significant because it reveals much about Johnny life. "With his hands clasped behind his back, he looked as armless as Watahantowet, and in that blaze of sunlight he looked like a gnome plucked fresh from the fire, with his ears still aflame." Pg 69 This is stated by Johnny which is meaningful because it talks of how Owen look Armless. This theme of armlessness becomes a major theme throughout the novel and Owens death. “I SAW AN ANGEL.” Pg 102 Owen said this while he slept in bed with Johnny's mom, Tabby. This is significant because Owen's belief that he is an instrument of God is growing. He also thinks that this is why he killed Tabby accidentally.
This is stated by Johnny and is significant because it once again tells use that Owen is an instrument of God. It also allows us to visualize what Owen looks like on stage and what his parents think of him. "YOU SHOULDN'T BE HERE! IT'S SACRILEGE FOR YOU TO BE HERE." Pg 220 Owen yells this to his parents at the play. This is a sign that he has control over his parents and that they fear him. "I BELIEVE HE'S A KIND OF SAVIOR, I DON'T CARE IF HE'S A MACKEREL-SNAPPER - HE'S GOT SOMETHING WE NEED." Pg 335 This quote is from Owens diary about JFK. This is significant because it cause Owen to become more adult like as well as bringing back the Gods instrument theme. "NOW MY DREAM HAS SHOWN ME HOW I AM GOING TO DIE. I'M GOING TO BE A HERO! I TRUST THAT GOD WILL HELP ME, BECAUSE WHAT I AM SUPPOSE TO DO LOOKS VERY HARD." PG 416 Owen write this in his diary to tell of his dream. It is significant because it tells us that Owen knows he will die a hero and lets us know he really is an instrument of God. “I was twenty-one and I was still a Joseph; I was a Joseph then, and I’m just a Joseph now.” Pg 439 This quote by Johnny is significant because it tells use that Johnny is still a virgin. Also it tells use he will always listen to Owen and play the roles he wants him to. "O God- please give him back! I shall keep asking You." Pg 617 This quote by Johnny is significant because it tells use that Johnny is still not over the death of Owen and never will be.
