Johnny is a simple person whose life would have been completely different without the contribution of Owen. As a young boy Johnny's mother was killed by Owen in a baseball game. As time passed Owen continually tried to make this up to Johnny, once by retaking a grade in school to stay with Johnny and another by cutting off Johnny's finger in order to keep him out of Vietnam. Johnny doesn't know who his real father is until adulthood. Before then he has grown to love and trust Dan as his father. Also he loves and trusts Owen with all his heart. As a child Owen got Johnny to believe in God, because of this Johnny is a regular churchgoer. He also becomes a teacher. Johnny, as an adult, moves to Canada also because Owen thinks it would be good for him. At the end of the book we know that Johnny is still morning the death of his mother and Owen. This is why he writes about Owen. Also Johnny has an incredible memory of what happened in his life and when it happened. |
