Two opportunities for
fun in one weekend! Racing at El Mirage dry lake for land speed
records AND the Leonid Meteor shower!
To accomplish attendance
at both we loaded the camper Saturday morning and drove 80 miles or so
to the Mojave desert, met with our sons John, Geoff and families. I
raced here in the 60's and some of the same cars are still racing
today, real nostalgia for me and all new for Deloris.
About noon we
headed northeast across the desert towards Las Vegas to find the
perfect place with no city light to view the meteors. Our viewing site
and camp found us perched high above the desert at an abandoned mine site and
we BBQ'd
chicken for dinner. Off to bed early so we could be up at 1 AM, when
the appointed hour rolled around we dressed warmly and stepped out to
the most amazing heavenly display either of us had ever seen! One,
two, and sometimes four streaks of light at a time, some left trails
in the sky that lasted several seconds and one remained at least a
minute. Back in the sack at 2:30, slept in till 8 AM, a great
breakfast by Deloris and we headed off to explore the area and head
for home before the Las Vegas crowd turned I15 into a road rage
nightmare. Home by 2 PM we covered just over 400 miles and had a great
time. Sorry! no meteor pictures just the kids at El Mirage and a
spectacular sunset.
