Use this guide
to help you form your essay. You need not address all of these issues in
your work, but please do consider them as you prepare to write.
Writing your essay:
You should consider issues that were common to all of the sources
you analyzed. Compare and contrast attitudes, legal issues, and how families,
communities, and political leaders impact the lives of interracial couples.
Consider the lives of the children of these relationships, and how their
racial identities may or may not impact the future of race relations in the
United States. Consider the “different worlds” of Othello and Desdemona,
and the different worlds of black and white Americans today.
Develop a clear thesis:
What have you learned about interracial relationships? How are today’s
attitudes similar or different from those of the characters in Othello?
What did you learn from online conversations with your classmates?
Support your thesis with information from the resources:
Use specific quotes where applicable.
Conclude your essay:
What conclusions have you come to in your research? Do you have a personal
opinion about interracial relationships? What does the future of race relations
look like in the context of interracial relationships, specifically considering
the children of those relationships? Does community segregation still exist?
How did the opinions and insights of your classmates influence your
own conclusions?
