New Orphan Arrives

Carmanito is three years old. He has been abandoned by his mother. The boys gave Carmanito a warm welcome the first week he was here. He was given a party and initiated with white face paint and ballons, a custom that can be traced to West African traditions.

Carmanito was sent to the medical clinic where he got a complete medical checkup and blood work. He is reported to be healthy but suffers from a slight case of anemia.

At first Carmanito was very quite and almost catatonic at first. He would stand and stare in the midst of a busy playground. Often he would not respond to simple directions. Our longterm volunteers, Amy and Grace, worked with him everyday in learning lab. They did not push him. Slowly he has started to respond, even smiling once in a while.

It is hard to know what goes on in the mind of these children. They certainly show grief and a sense of loss. Carmalito still wanders around looking dazed. But through love and care he will begin to bloom. He is in a special place where he has the best chance to heal from his trauma.

Field report from Good Samaritan Orphanage, Dominican Republic

Volunteer from Central Michigan

Amy is our newest longterm volunteer. She hails from Central Michigan and is a secondary education major. She has just graduated and is engaged to be married to another Orphanage Outreach volunteer who was down here last spring. He will join her for a week in March.

Amy is a gifted teacher. Her quiet but focused presentation to the children in learning labs are having a profound impact. She is working with the older boys on their english. Also each day she works in the local schools in the morning helping teachers to teach english mostly to 4th-6th grade classes. Amy will head up the teams this spring who will be volunteering in the local schools. In the meantime, she is getting aquainted with the local teachers and principles.
