School Starts this Week
The orphans of El Buen Samaritano started school today. We have 11 boys going in the morning and 11 in the afternoon. We have 5 preschoolers who remain here during the day and are learning readiness skills. Here in the Dominican Republic children in the public schools only go to school for 3 or 4 hours a day. We also learned that two of our children will not be able to go school beyond the sixth grade. The reason for this is because they are Haitian. This is blatant discrimination and our staff is having meetings with school officials today to see if we can get our boys permission to go beyond the sixth grade. So far, the school officials are telling us this is national policy. The potential tragedy of this situation is that Santos is our most brilliant child. He is clearly a genius. But because he is genetically Hatian, Dominicans do not want to put resources into children like this. We have noticed over this last year that Santos who is doing algebra and chemistry in our learning labs was not being passed onto higher grades. He was placed in the sixth grade. Now we know why. It is these kinds of situations that give us reasons to stay and help promote change. It gives us purpose, especialy when we see that brillant children like Santos could be helped by our influence. Also our many friends who assist us in our ministry are also helping us to God's work here in the DR. Every day we see the reasons God called us here. Plymouth State University Students here this Week Twenty-two Students arrived on Saturday and started pouring into the orphanages. Marta and I helped say goodby to 24 university volunteers from last week and within hours welcomed a new group from Plymouth State University. Because public schools open this week we will send teams into the schools to help teach English to 300 community children including our boys from the orphanage. A campus minister and a professor of history are part of this team of volunteers. Good News from Our Friends We have received news that our frinds from MCC in Portland are putting a group together to come down this summer. We are so excited to have our church participate in a direct way with these orphaned and abandoned children. Also Sharon Haynes from Ridgefield will be here the week of February 19 and join in with a group of 22 students from Western Ontario University. You cannot imagine how important this is to us and how affirming it is to have friends show this kind of live and support. It is the greatest reward. We see it as love from God coming to visit us. Academic Invitation
Dale has received an invitation for the third year in a row to present a paper on Science and Religion on April 29, 2005, at Seattle University. His abstract and paper were accepted on the subject of Quantum Teleportation and its Implications for Epistemology and Consciousness. In celebration of this Marta took a picture of Dale at the beach last week who appears to be involved in a quantum dream according to Marta. She says Dale is in outer space again. Dale's academic recognition is a valuable asset to the groups who come down here. Not only do they get valuable life experiences but they are able often to get academic credit for their work here because of Dale's presence. |
