Leadership Summit
For three days Marta and I gathered with two other couples and a single person to learn in a deeper way about our mission to orphans in the Dominican Republic. We discussed our programs in the various orphanages where we work and we developed strategies for the educational programs we bring to the children through the hundreds of volunteers we bring down here. We set goals for math, english, and writing programs both for the orphanages and the communities in which these orphanages operate. We initiated an adopt a school program to assist education in the public schools. Added to all this we focused on how to be better leaders by watching training tapes. We listened to several hours of advice from Rev. Bill Hybells of a church in Chicago with 35 thousand members. He talked about how to work with volunteers. During the three days all of us got to know one another better and appreciate the various gifts we bring to the Dominican Republic. Dale's book is available online along with some other items to help promote the book. . University Students here on Winter Break Students arrived on Saturday and started pouring into the orphanages. Marta and I helped to shuttle students to the various places from noon to midnight. In our location at Good Samaritan we have 26 wonderful young people and one retired male nurse. The students have interacted with the children immediately. We started learning labs today and they children will have a head start as they prepare for school next week. Added to our learning lab this year is a special class for some deaf children in the area. The local schools do not allow handicapped children to attend schools so we are filling in the gap. Thanks to Coco, our new staff person, she is teaching parents to communicate to their deaf children. Also she is training volunteer teachers who will work with these children this year. A group of university students who will be here for a few weeks are developing curriculum especially suited to the deaf. |
