Book by Dale presented to Prince of Wales

During the years that Dale lived at Mor Gabriel Monastery, a Syrian Orthodox Monastery in Turkey on the border of Iraq he edited an Aramaic Gospel. He collated 44 Aramaici MSS and wrote extensive footnotes. This four year Bible project was funded by the Turkish Bible Society and published in 1996. This Bible was given as a gift to Prince Charles on October 26, 2004, at Deir Zaferon Monastery. It was presented by Bishop Saliba who was a classmate of Dale and later a fellow clergy. Along with the Aramaic Gospel, a book on the history of the region by Dr. Hans Hollerweger of Lintz Univeristy in Austria and a hand written Gospel by Bishop Cicek of Holland were also presented. The Prince has taken an interest in the Orthodox Church over the last few years and there is some speculation that he may leave the Anglican Church in protest over recent theological positions.

Contemplating God

For the last year Dale has been working on translating and commenting on 92 Aramaic hymns, mostly from the seventh and eighth centuries, although some are as old as the 3rd century. He has collaborated with composers and musicians in Sweden to tranfer these songs, only known by oral tradition, into western notation. The importance of these hymns is that they are Semitic and some relate to the time of Jesus by tradition. This 180 page book will be released in January of 2005.

Release the Hero Within This is a guide for those who are considering giving their lives to service, whether it be the Peace Corps, AmeriCares, or overseas mission work. It is also for those who have done short term volunteerism for NGOs and need to process the experience. Giving our lives to others is a deeply psychological and spiritual process. There are well know guideposts identified in the treatise as well as the author's personal lessons from years of work in distant lands.

Cambridge University Professor to use Monks of Izla Book Dr. Erica Hunter has notified Dale that his book on the Monks of Mount Izla, a history book on monasticism during the 4th to 6th centuries, will be used in a a course on Eastern Monasticism this Spring.

Field report from Good Samaritan Orphanage, Dominican Republic
Christmas Pig at Orphanage

The orphans washed the Christmas pig as it was prepared for slaughter and Christmas Eve celebration. The 100 pound pig was a source of delight. We were told this is a special tradition here in the Dominican Republic. Over 90 people, including the orphans celebrated in a Christmas Eve meal.

Volunteers Arrive Soon

We just got a list of volunteers who will be here during winter break. We have stuudents coming from San Francisco State, West Michigan, University of Minnesota, Vermont, Penn State, Oberlin, and Iowa. Some are people returning for a second time to volunteer and assist our orphans in educational projects. We are busy getting ready for their arrival. Most will come only for a week. But we have four people who will be here for three weeks.

Thanks to our Supporters

A big thanks to the Methodist Mens Bible Study group for continued support. Also we so appreciated the many kind comments and prayers from MCC members in Portland. Darren Wertz of Ridgefield is a special friend in Christ who has always been so helpful. Sharon and her daughter baked goodies for the kids who devoured them the first day we got back. Thanks everyone.
