Christmas in New York
On the way back to the Dominican Republic we had a layover of 11 hours in New York. So we stored our luggage and took the subway into Manhattan. We got off at Madison avenue and walked over to Rockafeller center where we saw the Christmas tree. We went up to the Rainbow room and looked for television stars. Of course we have not seen television for a year so maybe we saw some and did not know it. Then we went across the street to Radio City Music Hall and Marta pretended to be a rockette. Then we went down to Greenwich village and went to a jazz club and got a feel for New York night life. We returned to JFK about 2 pm and took a flight out at 6 am. It was great to see New York at Christmas. Coco Barrett Arrives
Coco Barrett arrived yesterday at the orphanage. For a few weeks she has been staying up north at the orphanage at Monte Cristi getting to know staff there. She is making a two year pledge to volunteer here at the orphanage. It should make a huge difference. She is gifted in teaching deaf and blind children. On a previous visit she contacted special needs schools here and we will be working with these children too. SPecial needs children are often not allowed in schools here. So these children are taught by a group of parents who are struggling. Our orphans fondly welcomed Coco. Dale's books available at www.lulu.com/barhanna Books Relating to the Language of Jesus Release the Hero Within This is a guide for those who are considering giving their lives to service, whether it be the Peace Corps, AmeriCares, or overseas mission work. It is also for those who have done short term volunteerism for NGOs and need to process the experience. Giving our lives to others is a deeply psychological and spiritual process. There are well know guideposts identified in the treatise as well as the author's personal lessons from years of work in distant lands. Children's Stories for Adults These are stories for both adults and children in the style of C.S. Lewis. Written for intelligent children. 105 pp. Asian Faces of Jesus This is an analysis of Christian, Muslim, and Buddhist documents related to cross cultural understandings of Jesus within past historical contexts. A Buddhist Gospel on the life of Christ, a Sufi tract on the words of Jesus, and a Semitic Christian text are presented to the reader in clear and concise language with an analysis to help understand the origins and motives of the writings. Corpus Gradum These are the collected lectures and published papers of the author who has specialized in the field of studies relating to Aramaic in general and monastic literature in particular. But his treatises treat such topics as theophysics and liturgics as well. 165 pp. Mailing Address: Snail Mail Mailing address (via the kindness of our friend): Dale and Marta Johnson% Leticia Minaya Roman de Pina 35 Mao, Velverde, Republica Dominicana ![]() |

Hong Kong Visit
Marta and I were invited by Emmanuel congregations to visit Hong Kong. We were hosted to a variety of activities, foods, and experiences. I spoke to the Hong Kong clergy association and the Hong Kong Evangelical Pastor Association. I gave sermons on each Sunday we were in the city and gave Bible lessons during the week days to various groups. Marta spoke to a Chinese Women's group and together we sang a song in Chinese for the Emmanuel English Congregation. Marta did some Christmas shopping in the Ladies District which is a world class place for true power shopping. What bargins! Of course we did not have much money, so it was great to find a few things for our families on a limited budget. We felt so fortunate to have the opportunity to fellowship and minister to Christians halfway around the world. It was a special treat to visit the University of Hong Kong Museum as the guest of Dr. Peng the curator to discuss the famous Nestorian Cross colleciton. This collection is especially important because it provides evidence for the existence of Christianity in China for more than 1500 years.
Volunteers Arrive Soon We just got a list of volunteers who will be here during winter break. We have stuudents coming from San Francisco State, West Michigan, University of Minnesota, Vermont, Penn State, Oberlin, and Iowa. Some are people returning for a second time to volunteer and assist our orphans in educational projects. We are busy getting ready for their arrival. Most will come only for a week. But we have four people who will be here for three weeks. Thanks to our Supporters A big thanks to the Methodist Mens Bible Study group for continued support. Also we so appreciated the many kind commentts and prayers from MCC members in Portland. Darren Wertz of Ridgefield is a special friend in Christ who has always been so helpful. Sharon and her daughter baked goodies for the kids who devoured them the first day we got back. Thanks everyone. |
