Central Florida Martial Arts Academy

Central Florida Martial Arts Academy teaches martial arts like no other school. What we teach is available for all ages, shapes, sizes, and backgrounds.

We are a family friendly mixed martial arts dojang, and do not condone violence, over-competitiveness, or impractical principles/ techniques. Our core curriculum is a style called Choi Kwang-Do, a martial art developed partly at Johns Hopkins University by Grandmaster Kwang Jo Choi. The techniques are healthy for the body and will not cause long-term damage; in fact, with a strong background in biomechanics and kinesiology, it may even help with old sports injuries! But Central Florida Martial Arts Academy does not wholly focus on this. Our second major principal is practical self-defense for men, women, and children. In this philosophy, we incorporate techniques from multiple source, primarily in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Shodokan Aikido. We also offer classes in Tai Chi Chuan as well as
Zumba- please check our Programs page for information on all of the various classes available.

As a part of Kinect Martial Arts, we are under Steve and Shelly Elrod, who have a strong background both with the US military and Law Enforcement. Nothing we practice is based off of traditionalism or outdated techniques. Every punch and kick can be used to defend oneself, regardless of size or strength. We go over all possible scenarios that one may find on 'the street', from stand-up self defense to groundwork. Again, however, we are a martial arts school devoted to the philosophy of non-violence and do not promote fighting of any kind.

Our classes are based on three simple principals:

  • The movements must be practiced, natural, and easy to learn and remember.
  • The movements must be effective against larger, stronger, and faster opponents.
  • The movements must be practiced repeatedly under gradually more realistic conditions.

Many of the traditional martial arts movements are difficult to learn and unrealistic in actual self defense even though they look very impressive. Our movements are EASY TO LEARN AND ARE VERY EFFECTIVE. From your very first lesson your techniques are SELF DEFENSE ORIENTED.

Kinect Martial Arts

Kinect Martial Arts is a group dedicated to the principals of self-defense and health for our students, as well as following the philosophies of non-violence and help for the greater good.

Kinect Martial Arts is run by Steve and Shelly Elrod, who achieved their ranks of International Chief Instructor/ Examiner and Chief Instructor respectively in Choi Kwang-Do. Aside from their knowledge of this martial art, they also have extensive experience in practical self-defense through their years in public service as Pinellas County Sheriff's Deputies. Mr. Steve Elrod is still an active duty Sheriff with the K-9 department, and Shelly Elrod, in her last years with the department, ran the aggressive scenario trainings with new recruits. She used these skills to develop the more family-friendly and yet still practical Women's Self Defense seminars held monthly or bi-monthly at Kinect Martial Art schools.

The Elrods strive to offer their students the most practical and well-rounded training possible. This includes not only the Choi Kwang-Do curriculum (which is our core training), but also close-range and ground techniques to defend oneself in any situation. Our techniques are also based off of the principals of biomechanics, kinesiology, and pyschonueroimmunology, which is our legacy from CKD. This means that what you learn in class will not be damaging or stressful for the body in the long-term.

Kinect Martial Arts is not associated with Choi Kwang-Do Martial Art International, but instead strives to avoid the 'politics' of large organizations in an effort to provide the maximum benefits for our students.

Kinect is a family-oriented group, and does not condone violence or fighting of any kind. Although we are a well-rounded martial arts school, you will not find ring fighting or other dangerous and ultimately impractical forms of training at Central Florida Martial Arts Academy.

At Central Florida Martial Arts Academy, you will find training in a fun and relaxed yet safe and structured environment, promoting maximum learning for all ages.
