Stompin' the junior eagles (FCP 5-0 Santa Clara)
Lets be honest here, we knew last year that FCP would end up champions this season. Our cocky SOB of a coach, Jose Mourinho, promised us the title last season in his first press conferance with FCP. Guess what? He delivered. Today's game against Santa Clara was more of a formality than anything else, two early Porto goals set the tone for Porto's 19th league title.

After Derlei made it 2-0 nine minutes into the match, the taste of champaign was on all of our tongues. It doesn't matter whether you were in the stands at Antas or at home on your couch across the Atlantic, you could taste the sweetness of victory on your pallate. Despite the early 2-0 lead, the Dragoes followed Jose Mourinho's season-long script to perfection. At times they resembled a swarm of bluejacket bee's surrounding any Santa Clara player who had the misfortune of holding the ball. At other times the Dragoes resembled artists and not athletes. Each pass had a receiver and was delivered with pin-point precision. Every tackle had purpose and near perfect timing. Santa Clara, to their credit, had one big opportunity in the first half when they forced a full stretch save by Baia off a free kick. That didn't change anything though. Porto kept virtually all the pressure on the Santa Clara end.

Derlei scored his second of the match a few minutes into the second half when he collected a Helder Postiga rebound and buried it past Jorge Silva. With the game and championship wrapped up, the Dragoes did not decide to 'go Italian' and sit on their lead, instead they continued to swarm the Santa Clara end looking to add more goals to this already memorable day. Deco in particular was looking for that goal. He was always dangerous whenever he had the ball and should be arrested for the way he stole the ball with such ease off of Santa Clara. His most dangerous opportunities came when he stood over the ball planning his next free kick and his most beautiful movements came when he used his magic feet to dance over the ball making more than one Santa Clara defender look lost. He finally did get his goal ten minutes from time when he sent a laser-like free kick past the Santa Clara wall and into the lower left corner of the goal.

The final goal of the match came fromt he phenom, St.Helder. Derlei returned the favor to Postiga when his rebound was blasted into the goal by Helder Postiga a handful of minutes before the end of the match. Ironically it was Helder Postiga who scored the opening goal for Porto this season, and it was Helder Postiga that scored the goal that sealed our 19th championship.

The trophy belongs to us. We were far and away the best team in Portugal this season no matter what 'other' fans would have you believe. All of our summer transfers paid off in a big way and have given us an opportunity to win three trophies in the same year (League, Portuguese Cup, UEFA Cup). I know for certain I won't forget this season and I'm more than certain neither will you. One for the ages, now let me go get my glass of port and celebrate.

Somos Campees!!!.

Porto beats Nacional late!
F.C Porto faced Nacional in the islands of Madeira. Porto started with most of their reserves. Porto opted to rest the regulars who had played a long game in Greece against PAO witch they won 2-0 to qualify for the next round of the Uefa Cup witch now they will face Italian side S.S Lazio.Capucho did not play the game in greece, he watched from the bench Derlei score both Porto goals.
Nuno Capucho also did not see action in the past Super Liga game against U.Leiria. But Mourinho selected and started Capucho in this game in Madeira, only to see Capucho play very poorly and still looks out of form. Porto was shocked when Nacional player Adriano scored late in the first half to make his Super Liga tally to 14 goals. Mourinho in the begining of the second half made three subs, and one was taking out Nuno Capucho.

Porto looked better and were always very dangerous that led to the goals finally, as Derlei one of Mourinho's halftime subs and the hero of Athens scored his fourth Super Liga goal to tie the game up 1-1. Then came Deco's turn the other sub his corner kick cross was met by a Ricardo Carvalho header in the 88th minute to give Porto the 2-1 victory. Porto again has a 13 point lead over 2nd place Benfica.

Nuno Capucho seen in the above picture handed out the #21 shirt for the 21,000 seats sold already for the new Antas ground, later in the week it already had reached 22,000+ as Porto fans keep buying. Porto's objective is to sell 30,000 season tickets and they are on that pace if not even more.

FC Porto 0-1 Panathinaikos
OPORTO, Portugal, March 13 (Reuters) - A lone goal by Polish striker Emmanuel Olisadebe earned Panathinaikos a 1-0 away win over Porto in a UEFA Cup quarter-final first leg on Thursday, where the home team had most chances but lacked finishing power.
A firm Panathinaikos defence withstood a fast-running Porto for the first half hour, after which Portuguese forward Helder Postiga hit the post in one attack, struck the side-netting from a corner and later had a shot cleared off the line by Greek defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos.

The visitors relied on swift counter-attacks and had a good chance early on when Finnish midfielder Joonas Kolkkas hit a rebound from Porto defender Jorge Costa but was denied by Portuguese international goalkeeper Vitor Baia.

Coach Jose Mourinho beefed up the Porto attack with three second-half substitutes and forward Cesar Peixoto came off the bench to shoot just wide, while playmaker Deco Souza's accuracy also failed him.

But Olisadebe was on form and threatened early after the break by going clear, only to hit wide. He didn't miss a second chance offered by a cross from Kolkka in the 70th minute, which he headed past Baia.
Postiga found the net for Porto in injury time, but the 44,000+ crowd at the Antas stadium was silenced when Italian referee Domenico Messina ruled the forward was offside.

'It was one of those nights you get in football, when you get the feeling you wouldn't have scored even if you'd played for three or five hours,' Mourinho said after the game.

'But the important thing is what I told my counterpart after the game: 'Don't celebrate, because it's not over yet'.

'I think we are capable of winning (the return leg) in Athens, although it will obviously be difficult.'

Porto pull clear after carnival clash
LISBON, March 4 (Reuters) - Porto moved 13 points ahead of chasers Benfica in the Portuguese title race by beating their 10-man rivals 1-0 away in a carnival showdown on Tuesday.

After a slow start, Porto gradually gained possession and playmaker Deco Souza forced Benfica goalkeeper Jose Moreira to tip the ball over with a free kick in the 22nd minute.

Benfica came closest to scoring in the first half when Portuguese international Nuno Gomes hit the right post from 20 metres after launching a rare counter-attack down the left wing.

Deco scored the decider in the 36th when he picked up a long forward pass from midfielder Maniche Ribeiro on the edge of the box and beat two markers to tuck the ball inside the left post.

Benfica were down to 10 men for the last 20 minutes after a late challenge by defender Ricardo Rocha on Porto's fast-moving Brazilian forward Derlei da Silva.

The home side stayed in the game despite being a player short and Gomes was again on target, but his 20-metre drive was easily stopped by Portuguese international goalkeeper Vitor Baia.

Lithuanian 'supersub' Edgaras Jankauskas missed a chance to add to Porto's lead shortly before time when he miskicked a cross from Russian Dmitri Alenichev and sent the ball spinning past the left post.
BEST SIDE WON

'We were the better side, and I think we showed that we deserved to win,' Porto trainer Jose Mourinho said after the game. 'In my opinion, the margin should have been wider, but we have three more points and one less game to play.'
With 10 games left, Porto lead the standings with 63 points as they bid for their first title since 2000, while Benfica lie second on 50.
Jose Antonio Camacho accepted his first defeat since taking charge at Benfica in December in what was the last match at the Estadio da Luz before making way for a new centrepiece stadium to host the 2004 European championship finals.

'They got into the game more and we lost a lot of possession,' the Spanish coach said, admitting Benfica's chances of overtaking Porto were 'almost lost'.

'We now have to secure second place and open the gap (with third-placed Sporting).'

Reigning champions Sporting, held 1-1 aqt Belenenses on Saturday, are just two points behind Benfica in the race for second spot and a place in the Champions League qualifiers.

Rescheduled from its weekend slot to Shrove Tuesday and celebrated with Brazilian-style carnival parades in Portugal, the match was played to a capacity crowd of 54,500 at Lisbon's Estadio da Luz.

Porto regain 10-point lead after 3-0 win
LISBON, Feb 23 (Reuters) - Injury and suspension-hit Porto beat bottom club Beira Mar 3-0 on Sunday to resume their 10-point lead at the top of Portuguese premier league over Benfica, who crushed Vitoria Setubal 6-2.
Porto's playmaker Deco Souza and defender Jorge Costa were both suspended and defender Nuno Valente, midfielder Francisco Costinha and striker Derlei Silva were all injured.

But the league leaders opened the scoring at their Antas stadium with a penalty converted by midfielder Cesar Peixoto in the fourth minute.
Porto, fresh from demolishing Turkish side Denizlispor 6-1 in a UEFA Cup fourth round, first leg match last Thursday, went two-up in the 23rd minute when striker Helder Postiga scored from just inside the area after receiving a neat pass from Russian midfielder Dimitri Alenitchev.

Lithuanian substitute striker Edgaras Jankauskas sealed the win in injury time with a subtle close-range shot.

With 11 matches left to play in the championship, Porto lead with 60 points while Benfica lie second on 50. The two clubs meet next weekend.

Porto goal spree sinks visitors(UEFA)
Porto virtually guaranteed their place in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals tonight with a comprehensive 6-1 victory against Denizlispor in a fourth round first-leg tie in which all the goals came after the interval.

First-half frustration A well-manned Denizlispor defence frustrated Porto in the first half, although Lithuanian striker Edgaras Jankauskas and forward Nuno Capucho both tested visiting goalkeeper Dirk Heinen and midfield player Mario Silva hit the bar from a corner. The Turkish visitors nearly went ahead a minute before the break when Ali Tandogan picked out Ersen Martin but he headed the ball just over the target.

Denizlispor crumble Denizlispor crumbled after the break and Capucho opened the scoring in the 48th minute, jumping high to plant a header inside the right post from playmaker Deco Souza's corner. Derlei put the Portuguese Super Liga leaders further ahead five minutes later by again rising high to connect with a cross from defender Nuno Valente. Free-kick specialist Deco, who adopted Portuguese nationality last week, then set up unmarked defender Ricardo Costa for Porto's third in the 64th minute.

Swift pass Five minutes later, Capucho found Derlei, whose swift pass was volleyed past Heinen by Jankauskas to make it 4-0 before Deco grabbed his side's fifth with a free-kick. Roman Kratochvl scored a consolation goal in the 78th minute - the first conceded by Porto at home in this season's UEFA Cup campaign - but is was too little too late.

Crowd in full voice The home crowd at the Antas stadium were in full voice again eight minutes from time, however, as Russian midfield player Dmitri Alenitchev completed a memorable 45 minutes after receiving a return pass from Derlei, beating three defenders, and then blasting the ball into the net from close range.

Leaders Porto suffer first defeat of the season

Despite the loss, Porto keep a comfortable 13-point lead over Benfica, who play Nacional Madeira at home later on Sunday, at the top of the Portuguese premier league.

Porto had not lost in 29 games in a streak that began last season.

Maritimo went ahead in the 16th minute when Dutch defender Mitchell der Gaag scored from a header inside the box.

Porto levelled on 67 minutes with a header by Brazilian striker Derlei Silva.
The goal raised hopes among the visiting fans that their side could come from behind to win, as they have done nine times this season.

But Maritimo's Brazilian striker Gaucho Gomes sealed the win with a goal in the 70th minute.
With 12 games left, Porto lead the premiership on 57 points. Benfica are second with 44 points with Sporting, who take on Braga on Sunday, third on 41 points.

O passe, a desmarcao, a presso sufocante, o cruzamento preciso. Neste F.C.

A partir deste instante, estava feito.

Does Capucho hold the key for McCarthy?
Nuno Capucho has been rumoured to be leaving FCPorto as part of the deal for McCarthy. Last season, Capucho was close to be heading for the French championship- Bordeaux wanted him to play alongside Pauleta- the midfielder has an oportunity to leave Porto again but this time it's closer to home. Capucho has got skill, he performed an excellent season and will be one of the Portistas in the 2002 World Cup. In this case, it is to be believed that the Porto SAD admit that this would be a straight swap and that there are no concrete figures as to the value of the Portuguese International. Negotiations should be kept on hold until after the World Cup, where his "price" should increase.

FC Porto get UEFA spot with their victory over Paos Ferreira.
FC Porto got their worst qualification league spot in 20 years, as they saw Sporting win the title in 2001/02,also ironically the year Sporting won the title 1981/82 was the year FC Porto finished so poorly.
Porto made the Uefa Cup with a 2-1 triumph over Paos Ferreira. They had needed city neighbours Boavista to lose to steal them to the Champions' League berth. Brazilian midfielder Deco gave the Das Antas side the lead just past the half hour but Leonardo equalised for the hosts on the cusp of half-time. South Africa's forward Benni McCarthy, however, popped up with his 11th goal in 10 games to break the deadlock.Nuno Capucho was subbed in the 86th minute.
Benfica lost 3-2 to Maritimo and most important their hopes for the last UEFA cup spot, Boavista take 2nd spot and also a Champions League spot with that.Sporting are the 2001/2002 Portuguese First Divisions champions, the team's second championship in three seasons.

Capucho left the meeting with double trauma.
Nuno Capucho did not finish the championship in the best way, a time that suffered two traumas in the meeting v's Paos Ferreira. One of them was in the thigh of the right leg, having left the stadium already with a tie in this zone, and another one in the cervical zone, the sequence of a fall after one ball launch disputed with a player of the Paos de Ferreira.

FC Porto win again to make it 8th straight and look now to Champions league instead of UEFA.
Porto turned on the style in their last home game this season as a Benni McCarthy hat-trick and Deco's brace fired them to victory over Santa Clara. A dramatic night in Oporto saw the hosts all but guarantee qualification for next season's Uefa Cup, with diminutive playmaker Deco in inspirational form, both making and scoring goals.
Porto's other great hero on the night was South Africa striker McCarthy, who scored his second hat-trick of the month. Things did not start smoothly for Porto, however, as Santa Clara took the lead through Tonito. McCarthy equalised almost immediately, but Miner put the visitors back in front. Deco then turned the game, scoring twice in five minutes to put Porto into the lead, only for Vayer to drag Santa Clara back on to level terms. McCarthy sent the home faithful into delirious celebration on the hour, though, as he scored twice in quick succession to seal the points.
Porto hit the bar 4 times and Nuno Capucho also managed to hit the bar, but Capucho was in great form setting up many great dangerous crosses that led to many of Porto's scoring chances one cross was netted in by non other than Benni Mac. The night was marred by three red cards in the closing stages - two for Santa Clara, before McCarthy himself was dismissed for Porto. Benfica beat Boavista at Luz 2-1 and kept pace for the last UEFA spot witch FC Porto holds, but with that Boavista loss that means Porto are just 2 points back of Boavista and can challenge them for the last Champions League spot in the final game of the season,an FC Porto win and a Boavista loss or tie will mean instead of Porto getting into the UEFA cup they will play in the Champions League.

Braga suffers BigMac ATTACK!!!
FC Porto staked their claim for a Uefa Cup place by demolishing Sp.Braga 4-0. South Africa striker Benni McCarthy ran the show, hitting a hat-trick.
The first came after a rebound off the post from McCarthy, the second following an inch-perfect pass from Deco and the third after a cross from Candido Costa. Helder Postiga completed the rout in the final minute.Nuno Capucho received a yellow card and was subbed in the 80th minute. Porto now maintain third place in the league and have a two point lead on Benfica for the last UEFA spot. Sporting and Benfica tied 1-1 in the lisbon derby.

FC Porto Benni McCarthy magical again...
In an important match up for FC Porto at Antas facing northern side Vitoria Guimaraes,Nuno Capucho and his teammates accomplished what they wanted and needed to stay in the hunt for the UEFA spot in the 1Liga as Porto got the 3 points for the win. It was important since Benfica at home beat Pacos Ferreira 4-0 and are tied with Porto in points with 59 each, but Porto have the advantage in third spot since they beat Benfica at home and tied them away.
Benni McCarthy hit two as FC Porto beat SC Guimares 3-0 at the Das Antas. South African forward McCarthy found the net in the 12th and 21st minutes, before Deco wrapped up a convincing win with a third just before the end it was a great goal by the Brazilian player.

Portugal tie Brazil 1-1 in Lisbon.
Portugal held four-time world champions Brazil to a 1-1 draw in Lisbon tonight in an evenly-balanced game between two nations expected to impress in the forthcoming FIFA World Cup finals.Srgio Coneico opened the scoring and gave Portugal the lead in front of 50,000 screaming fans in Lisbon, only to see a late Ronaldinho penalty kick make it 1-1 final. FC Porto player Nuno Capucho who was called up for the game against Brazil did not play into Oliveira's plans and watched from the bench. Portugal now have one more friendly witch will be played in Macau against China.

Portugal squad for World Cup warm-up with Brazil
This is the squad Antnio Oliveira picked for Portugal's World Cup warm-up against Brazil on April 17,
Goalkeepers: Ricardo (Boavista), Vitor Baia (FC Porto)
Defenders: Marco Caneira (Benfica), Jorge Costa (Charlton/Eng), Jorge Andrade (FC Porto), Fernando Couto (Lazio/Ita), Abel Xavier (Liverpool/Eng), Rui Jorge (Sporting Lisbon),Beto (Sporting Lisbon)
Midfielders: Paulo Bento (Sporting Lisbon), Hugo Viana (Sporting Lisbon), Pedro Barbosa (Sporting Lisbon), Fernando Meira (VfB Stuttgart/Ger), Paulo Sousa (Espanyol/Spa), Petit (Boavista), Sergio Conceicao (Inter Milan/Ita), Nuno Capucho (FC Porto), Luis Figo (Real Madrid/Spa)
Strikers: Pauleta (Bordeaux/Fra), Joao Pinto (Sporting Lisbon)
The 3 major absences are Nuno Gomes(Fiorentina) who just was recently injured, Rui Costa(ACMilan) still out, also missed Finland, also Simo Sabrosa who got injured in the friendly against Finland and will be out of the World Cup. The 3 players called up to face Brazil that did not face Finland are Vitor Baia, Paulo Sousa, Fernando Meira.

FC Porto and UEFA and 3...
In a wet pitch very slippery at times in Faro, Capucho and the rest of the FC Porto team accomplished their mission. With alot of key players missing from the starting roster. Clayton scored twice for FC Porto as they won 3-0 at Farense to keep up their challenge at the top of the table. After 13 minutes he was fastest to react to Deco's pull back from the by-line, and six minutes after half-time he doubled the advantage, heading in the loose ball after Joco Ferreira had beaten out Fredrik Soderstrom's shot. Nuno Capucho also had a great chance and options to pass to but decided to shoot only to see the ball go over the net.
Dimitri Alenichev's individual effort sealed the points for Porto in the 64th minute. The three points means that Porto now are again in 3rd spot in the portuguese league, and also have the UEFA spot that Benfica lost today from their 0-0 tie with Santa Clara.

FC Porto and Capucho return back to the wins.
Today FC Porto suffered but in the end they got what they deserved a 2-1 victory over the Barcelos side who gave all they had but could not avoid the loss. GilVicente shocked the Antas faithful when Ricardo Fernandes isolated put one past Paulo Santos on a rebound, that seemed to inspire Porto who where led by strong performances from Deco and Nuno Capucho who returned after his two match ban from the Wilson incident. But not only those two today performed well Candido Costa had a great game and was in on the scoring and the young kid wonder Helder Postiga also showed his talent finding the back of the net. Capucho set up the winning goal by never giving up on the ball and crossing it for a Helder Postiga who scored the winning goal in the 85 minute.Than just a few minutes after Nuno Capucho almost scored an amazing acrobatic goal, Capucho's bicycle kick hit the crossbar. In the end it was a fair result as Porto get the three points and still chase Benfica for that 3rd spot in the league, and also the big picture is that third place result in the league access them to a UEFA spot for next season.

Capucho talks and says the team lacks confidence...
The portista forward Capucho, despite the return of FC Porto to the victories and to the end of 27 days and three games, yesterday, against Gil Vicente, admitted that " the team has lack of confidence".Nuno also says,
"In soccer there are also things like this. Worth more than what we have done, but things havent resulted well. Every day and every game we try to understand what is wrong so we can correct it and I believe we will get better. This game showed us to understand the players dont believe and a few things are missing because of that." recognized Capucho. "Our first half was a little bad, but even still we could have achieved and gotten another result. In the second we improved a lot and deserved the victory, witch is important to motivate us".

Portugal National Team coach Antnio Oliveira names the squad that will face Finland in a friendly.
The Seleco will play this wednesday Finland in a friendly for preparation for the World Cup comming up, this is the squad Antnio Oliveira chose. They are Ricardo,Frechaut,Jorge Costa,Fernando Couto,Marco Caneira,Petit,Hugo Viana,Joo Pinto,Srgio Conceio,Pauleta,Simo,Nlson,Jorge Andrade,Mrio Silva,Bino,NunoCapucho,Vidigal,Nuno Gomes.

Three new faces also making their first apearence in the"AA" they are Marco Caneira,Mario Silva and Nelson. The first two players were called up because of the injuries to Rui Costa and Luis Figo and Nelson because of the Quim suspension. The game is in Porto at 21h00,Estdio do Bessa can be seen on RTP1,RTPi on TV.

Flying Finland shocks Portugal 4-1 in Bessa. It was a night for all the players to forget and learn as for Nuno Capucho the player came in at the begining of the second half when the team trailed 3-1 but Capucho only good moment came when the player combined well with Conceio on a one touch play the rest was history as Portugal had a night to forget and also played short handed for the last 20 minutes of the game. But no excuses Portugal was just out played all game by the Fins.

Adeus Europa - Sparta double sinks Porto
Porto frustrated To squeeze into the last eight, Porto needed to win and rely on Panathinaikos FC losing to Real Madrid CF, but they were frustrated by a well-organised, energetic Sparta side that refused to roll over. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was Porto who had started the brighter side. Eight minutes into a tight first half, Helder Postiga beat Sparta defender Zdenek Grygera to a ball bouncing awkwardly into the Sparta area and stretched out a leg to lob the advancing keeper Petr Cech, but his effort drifted across the goalmouth and just wide of the unguarded net.Apart from brief touches, Capucho, Deco and Clayton lacked invention and the visitors' main first-half threat came from balls over the back line for Helder Postiga.

Moments later there was chaos in the Sparta area. Cech was forced to push Deco's free-kick behind and when Jaroik attempted to clear the ensuing corner, he watched in horror as his header crashed against his own crossbar before bouncing to safety.

As a result, the game was a tight affair, but Sparta hit twice in eight minutes to shatter Porto's dreams. On 63 minutes Libor Sionko cut inside from the right and latched onto Jir Jaroik's well-weighted through ball, outpacing the Porto defence. He checked and cut inside Silva, advanced towards the edge of the box and dispatched a low, firm shot into the corner of the net.

As Sparta sat back on their lead in the dying minutes, Rafael and Clayton both had good opportunities for the visitors, but goals, along with Porto's quarter-final dreams, simply failed to materialize.(UEFA)

Capucho:Team suffers goals and doesnt know how to turn it around.

It is a situation that has happened a lot during this season. Our team suffers goals but doesnt know how to turn the situation around, but now we are going to look ahead, with optimism, and give it the best we have. Confirmed the right midfielder of FC Porto.

The player also added about the game,"We knew only a victory would give us any hope of making it to the next round, in the first half we even had some opportunities to score goals, but in soccer there arent ifs, and, specially the Champions League. You pay badly for the mistakes. In response to coach Mourinhos comments about how the team played bad, When one team is collectively bad, the individuals have to disappear that is natural.

League punishes Nuno Capucho with two game suspension
The Commission discipline of the 1Liga today suspended FC Porto player, Capucho, for two games, as punishment for the elbow he threw on Belenenses Wilson, in the league game. The aggression of Capucho, that was not seen by the referee, Joo Ferreira (Setbal), but was shown later by TV video replays, it was considered by the Commission of discipline "deliberate and exempts and in the intention to offend and hurt the opponent". For beyond the two games of suspension, the portista right winger also was condemned to pay a fine of 1750 euros (350 contos,$4,000).

I did not want to attack Wilson ", swears Capucho
Nuno Capucho left disappointed, visibly annoyed, but Capucho forced himself not to smirk or break into a outburst of laughter. "This gives me the urge to only laugh", said, Nuno still incapable to sketch a simple smile. "the Portuguese soccer league makes me laugh", insisted. "It is everything that I can say". I would say more, however. That, for example, the suspension "is clearly unjust". "my intention was not attack him or to hurt him", swore Capucho, responding to the play he was involved with Wilson and the gesture that the Commission of discipline interpreted as passvel cotovelada of suspension. "I gained the position, only this", explained. "we cannot cut the arms".

Capucho detached the importance of the result, but it moved away the idea to have been the hero of the game. "It was an important victory because we knew that we could have been eliminated. We did not play a great game, but we frustrated their team, that is how we achieved this victory. There arent no heroes, already that's finished. The important thing is collectively to make a good game, because we know that later we have individualities that they can decide ", related. The extremity is already with the thought in the meeting of the end-of-week. "We have plus an important game with the Alverca, where we have that to demonstrate the class that we have".

European final 8 dreams still alive for FC Porto

Porto beat Panathinaikos to leave the Greek side needing a draw at home to Real Madrid to ensure a place in the quarter-finals. Porto have to beat Sparta Prague to have a chance of progression. Panathinaikos started the stronger in pouring rain, though Porto took the lead when Clayton crossed for Nuno Capucho to flick on for Deco to fire a first-time shot past Demis Nikopolidis.Jorge Andrade almost doubled the lead soon after, but his header went wide.

Panathinaikos were forced into a double-substitution on 27 minutes when Robert Jarni and Michalis Kostantinou clashed heads. Emmanuel Olisadebe and Joonas Kolkka came on. Pena then saw an effort well-blocked by Nikopolidis while at the other end Nikos Liberoupoulos had a goalbound effort stopped by Paulo Santos.

Pena then ended his goal drought, scoring for the first time since the beginning of November, by slotting home Capucho's cross from close range. Paulo Santos saved well from Olisadebe before Kolkka's drive from outside the area gave the visitors hope.

Goran Vlaovic boosted Panathinaikos' attacking options but saw a free-kick tipped onto the crossbar by the impressive Paulo Santos. The Greeks upped the pressure after Secretario was sent off but could still find no way through.(onefootball)

This was what Nuno Capucho had to say in an interview after the 3-0 loss to Belenenses.
"Before the game it never ran trough our heads what was about to happen. We have to know and realize we were inferior to Belenenses, who deserved to win by three goals."

Influential footballer Capucho confirmed also Nuno added; "For our competitor winning by three goals, is because our team was not good. But we have to speak collectively and it's important to speak collective."

Capucho in the mean time recognizes; "When some things don't function well it turns more difficult." When asked about positive results Capucho says, "Now we have to turn it around, actually we have to do better in the future."

When asked where F.C. Porto goes from here and their title hopes. "There is eight games left until the final of the league and we still have two Champions league games. We have to have pride in our profession because we have a shirt to defend with pride." That was Capucho's comments in Restelo Stadium at the press conference.

Capucho's reaction to Jos Mourinho comments.
Nuno Capucho understands Mourinho's anger after the loss to Belenenses and says;

"For the trainer to talk it's because he has his motives. We have to know how to direct his words. We have to understand him."

Replied F.C. Porto sub-captain to the journalists. Meanwhile a reporter mentioned accident and Capucho took note and spoke his mind by saying. "These years there were too many accidents, that's the truth but a team like F.C. Porto cant talk about accidents." that was reflecting F.C. Porto's 8 league losses. A very high number compared to previous seasons.

"In a couple of games we played very well, in others not at all. I am not a magician, if I knew what was the magic potion for this I would tell you. But I will limit myself to playing soccer."

Interview with Capucho after a training session at Antas this morning.

What a Change of Events.
After a disappointing result last week against Beira Mar, Porto came back strong on the road against Salgueiros winning 3-0. McCarthy scored two goals and Paredes also scored to secure the win for Porto. Porto entered the game without the services of two of it's top players, Deco and Jorge Andrade, who were both suspended for receiving red cards in last weeks game. Capucho had a good game, but found himself double teamed for most of the game and suffered 7 fouls, the most by any player. Porto is now 4-1 in the Liga since Mourinho took the job as head coach.

This win was especially important, because Porto was the only team in the top four to win this weekend. Sporting drew with Braga (2-2) at home, as did Boavista with Guimaraes (0-0). As for Benfica, they were on the receiving end of a shocking 2-0 home loss to a determined Leiria side. The win helps Porto stay in the race for the Championship.

This makes the race very interesting; with Benfica still having to play Sporting and Boavista; also Sporting and Boavista still having to play each other. This makes people believe the possibility that Porto still have a chance to reach the Championship.

Porto loses to Real Madrid at home
Porto came close to getting points in the first encounter with Real Madrid, in Spain, only to lose 1-0. Porto then had a chance to make waves in Group C of the Uefa Champions League. Madrid came in with 7 of their starters, either injured or on the bench. After Porto's first performance, it left many thinking that Porto would take advantage and get their first win and put pressure on the second place team, Panathinaikos.

Porto came in to the game strong, showing signs that they were going after a win. But only 8 minutes into the game, Porto's defense was caught off guard and Solari took advantage with an un-defendable header to the top corner of the goal. Only 12 minutes later Real Madrid capitalized again, off a Vitor Baia error. The ball was sent into the box off a free kick when Vitor Baia fumbled the ball and Ivn Helguera was there to put it in the back of the net. This goal put Porto in a very difficult position losing 0-2.

Porto and Capucho wouldn't quit, 28 minutes into the game; they were finally able to finish one of their many opportunities. The goal was a result of a great run and then pass from the young Helder Postiga and gave Porto and it's fans hope of a come back. Porto would continue to attack and miss chances against what many had said was a weak defense. But in the second half the Madrid defense closed all it's holes and would hold on to a 2-1 win in Porto.

Season 2001/2002...
Nuno Capucho This is going to be a big year for Nuno Capucho not only because its his 11 seasons in Primeira Divisao, Portugals domestic league but also the 2002 World Cup in Japan/Korea is soon. Capucho started 2001 well he achieved some goals at F.C.Porto like winning the Portuguese Cup and also was a regular in the Portuguese National Team where he gave some great performances when given a chance and partnered up well setting up great crosses to Portugals attack specially Nuno Gomes, than came some injuries witch he fought to get back from and did well. Capucho also was the subject in 2001 of many rumors of him leaving F.C.Porto to some Spanish clubs, English clubs and also French clubs, but one rumor that kept popping up was him going to Bordeaux a French club that really wanted his services and he looked to be transferred in the off-season to that French club. Bordeaux spoke to Capuchos agent which they knew Porto looked to be wanting the minimum from the French club around 7 million. Nuno Capucho had a cont ract with F.C.Porto until 2002. We all know now that his move to Bordeaux did not happen and he stayed at Porto and started the season well but his form has dropped and that has led to him being benched and he seen that playing in his home town Barcelos against the team Capucho launched his career in professional soccer with GilVicente ,Nuno came off the bench in the second half and scored maybe it was a statement to the coach Octavio Machado that Capucho isnt a bench player and that his skills and talents are too much to be an observer. Capucho got his starting role back the next match and started a few after that but looked to be struggling and out of form and those great crosses were not coming like they used too and when they did Porto had nobody to finish them.

Nuno Capucho didnt play in Portos 4-0 win against Viseu and was not even a sub, Capucho is fighting to get back to 100% and be match fit.People are saying his age might be catching up and all those knocks in all the years of playing top division soccer are playing also into affect. Its now 2002 and the new era has just begun at Porto with their coach Octavio Machado being released, and ex-Uniao Leiria coach Jos Mourinho being hired for the job this has maybe inspired Nuno because since Mourinho took over Capucho last 3 matches have been great performances with him even scoring a beautiful goal in Portos 3-2 win over Benfica. Nuno Capucho is still I think and also many others F.C.Portos best right winger and his dribbles and crosses are magnificent the spaces he creates and opens trough defences make him world class,Capucho is trying to be in his first World Cup and show the World his talents he played in Euro 2000 and started in the game against Germany witch Portugal won 3-0,but now Capucho faces a harder and tougher road ahead and thats Japan 2002 World Cup and for him to be in that squad the coach has to play him and Capucho has to show his talents and skills at FCP and prove he can play with the best in the world like we have seen him. I believe Capucho will be in this summers 2002 world cup, also that Nuno will play as regular at Futebol Clube Porto starting 11 as long as he is match fit .But with Portugal having so many star players at his position and all being hungry to play in 2002 for the Seleo witch has not been in the world cup since 1986 makes it that much harder for Nuno Capucho to grab a spot unless he plays like we are used to seeing him play and thats the highest level.
