A Tough Decision

H. G. Wells' first job was apprenticing as a draper's shop assistant. Wells did not like the draping business by any stretch of the imagination and was always looking for a way out. Wells did find a way out for a little while as he apprenticed with a chemist and then boarded with a Latin teacher but was then thrust back into the draping world.

Wells left his second draping job to go and help his old teacher in Midhurst. From Midhurst Wells was able to get a scholarship to the Normal School of Science. After dropping out of university Wells found a few assistant teaching jobs and then began to write. Writing is the job that he finally settled with, being, by far, the most lucrative of his choices.
