The organisation’s motto is Light to All.

Government School Ncha, Nwa subdivision. Survival may take priority over the acquisition of formal education.

ORES Was Born
ORES was the brainchild of three secondary school teachers who happened to be posted as science teachers to Government High School Nwa. Nwa is a small town in the North West Province of Cameroon perching at the frontier with neighbouring Nigeria. At that time (1998) Nwa was difficult to be reached by vehicle because the road was simply, dangerous. Nwa is one of the oldest subdivisions in the country but one of the most neglected. Poverty grew, the town found itself diminishing. Even today the town has neither pipe borne water nor electricity .There was pessimism everywhere.

The people of Nwa had not been blessed with fertile soil. Agriculture which is the main occupation of the people was low yield. Parents could not sustain the education of their children. Underscholarization was very high. Even when the children were enrolled in school, payment of fees and the purchase of essential textbooks, were nightmares. The result was early school abandonment and mass exodus to cities like Bamenda and Douala The unfortunate thing the teachers noted, was that these people migrated to towns with the hopes of acquiring jobs and a better living but most often because of their low level of education, they could not cope with the life there. The result was, the boys took up banditry while the girls indulged in prostitution. This is a typical trend in most rural zones in Cameroon today. These teachers were very moved by the circumstances. They realised the problem could not be solved by just one individual. It needed an organisation of persons to raise awareness, to advocate for the people, to stimulate them into self-reliant development. If the people had to migrate, let them be armed with a certain threshold level of education.

When ORES was born, the teachers were quick to realise that the problems of Nwa had a global dimension typical of the third world. We had to broaden our target zones. We were happy to learn that there is the Global Campaign for Education NGO’s. We went into networking coming to the forefront of the Education for All program as laid out in the world conference on education in Jomtien and recently, Dakar.

ORES is founded on the moral principle that: “a way of serving God is to serve man.” ORES is a nonprofit apolitical organisation.
