M a r g a r e t  C h u l a
Margaret Chula�known as Maggie to her friends�is a poet, teacher, performer, and editor of Katsura Press. Her five collections of poetry include Grinding my ink and Shadow Lines (with Rich Youmans), which received Haiku Society of America Book Awards.

From 1980-1992, she lived in Kyoto, Japan, where she taught Creative Writing at Doshisha Women's College and studied ikebana, woodblock printing, and zazen.

Margaret now lives in Portland, where she gives workshops for arts organizations, universities, and Zen centers. She has also produced multimedia performances with photographers, dancers, and musicians that have been presented at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, the Portland Art Museum, the Portland Japanese Garden, and internationally in Canada, Poland, and Japan. Her work has been supported by grants from the Regional Arts & Culture Council and Oregon Literary Arts.

Margaret Chula a Featured Speaker at Seattle's Bumbershoot Festival

On September 2, 2005, Margaret Chula spoke on the topic, "Women Haiku and Tanka Poets." This was a dramatic presentation of sacred and sensual poetry from tenth-century Japan to the present day. Beginning with tanka, the precursor to haiku, Chula took the audience through the centuries with poetry, music, and costumes. She featured the poems of Izumi, Shikibu, Yosano Akiko, Suzuki Masajo, and her own haiku from her Kyoto years. She also read poems from here new collection The Smell of Rust.
