Margaret Chula (page 2 of 2)

after the cease fire
refugees from Chechnya
return to rubble
sparrows weave the hair of children
into their spring nests

First Prize
, Japan Tanka Poets Society
International Tanka Contest, 2000

lying on a blanket
in the shade of a tree
I dream of childhood
     was the ground
     always this hard?

end of summer
the rust on my scissors
smells of marigolds

the black negligee
that I bought for your return
hangs in my closet
     day by day plums ripen
and are picked clean by birds

alone and brooding
why do I think of you
it's the honeysuckle
and that uncertain slant
of early evening light

carrying moonlight
into the house
the white peony

for a moment
nothingnessthen
noticing it

Easter morning
the bread dough breathes and
     rises
under its damp cloth

First Place
, Yuki Teikei Contest

spring wind
raked stones in the dry garden
flow without moving

Second Prize
, Mainichi Contest

through the rain
a riff of bird song
camellias half open

Editor's Choice
