His career started before I was even born, in 1984 and soon after his debut he found stardom as a tag team specialist with Marty Jannetty. They were then known as The Midnight Rockers and the duo took the American Wrestling Association (AWA) by storm with their brand of high risk maneuvers until their departure to the WWF in March of 1988. From there the two continued their success with the same elements that made them so popular in the AWA until it became apparent that a split was inevitable. Most longtime wrestling fans will undoubtedly remember the incident that marked the breakup of The Rockers. It all took place during Brutus Beefcakes Barber Shop interview segment where it appeared that everything was fine and dandy with the team until out of nowhere Michaels hit Jannetty with a superkick, later known as Sweet Chin Music. Then Michaels proceeded to throw his now former partner through a plate-glass window. Right then and there the world was introduced to a new Shawn Michaels, or should I say, The Heartbreak Kid. From there on Shawn was portrayed as a cocky, brash, and arrogant individual who could create audience emotion (heat). He quickly got his own skit segment called The Heartbreak Hotel. Michaels was developing into a star. He had the look and he had the skills both in the ring as a wrestler and out with the microphone. But the key to his success is the same key that many greats such as Triple H and The Undertaker have and that is he could change his role as quickly and as often as he liked. Heel to face, heel to face. Michaels tasted his first WWF gold in the form of the Intercontinental type. He defeated The British Bulldog and had a long seven month reign until he lost it to his former partner Jannetty. But a month later he was able to defeat Jannetty in a rematch for that same strap. During this time Michaels was in negotiation with the WWF and it is because of these negotiations that Shawn was stripped of his IC crown. By the time he signed a new contract and returned, Shawn returned with a new form of the IC title claiming that he had never lost the belt in the first place. Those claims were directed towards Razor Ramon. |
