From the hockey-crazed city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Chris could have very well followed in the footsteps of his father, Ted Irvine who played in the National Hockey League for the New York Rangers. Yet Chris chose a separate route and chose the sport of kings. Jericho trained in the famed Dungeon of the Hart Family which has produced many great, well-known stars such as Chris Benoit, Lance Storm, and sons Bret Hart and the late Owen Hart. This is perhaps the place where Jericho learned the science of mat wrestling, learning numerous holds, grapples, submissions, and escapes. The next step in Jerichos career came with the independent promotions all over the world. Whether it be in Canada, Mexico, Japan, Germany, the United States or wherever he performed, Jericho would leave the fans in awe. His work in the indies continued until 1997 where he was brought up to the hardcore world of ECW. ECW had a reputation of presenting the most vicious of the vicious. Some thought that ECW was not the place for a pretty boy like Chris. But as usual Jericho proved his critics wrong but adjusting to the environment and using the setting to his advantage to eventually win the ECW Television Title. Although not in ECW for a long period of time, Jericho had some memorable matches with the highly acrobatic Sabu. (If you want to see a good fast paced match, I suggest Extreme Warfare: Volume 2. Chris and Sabu had a kick ass match on the video) From ECW, Jericho went to the greener pastures of World Championship Wrestling where he dominated the Cruiserweight division by winning the Cruiserweight title a total of 5 times over gifted athletes such as Rey Mysterio Jr. and Dean Malenko. WCW is where Jericho made an impact as a sports entertainer with a cult following that never seemed to stopped growing. Jericho rode that horse to become one of WCWs top baby faces and became The Ayatollah of Rock N Rolla. Unfortunately the corrupt powers of WCW held Jericho back and in the end made his Lionheart character stagnant. An attempt was later made to turn Chris into a crybaby heel but it didnt have the same effectiveness, as did his face character. |
