Operations ARC

Your military member has just shared the news with you that s/he has been selected for recruiting duty. What do you do? At this point, very little different than you would for a normal PCS within the mainstream. However, there are a few items that can be done at this point to make the transition to USAREC a little smoother. Below is a checklist.

Notify friends and family that a move is on the horizon. If you are employed, notify your boss. If you have children, notify the school. When your spouse receives his/her recruiting packet, s/he will also be given dates for the time at the ARC. Your service member will have a report date of no later than 45 days after the graduation from the ARC.

Speak with all medical and dental personnel who have given you and/or your family care while at your current duty station. Notify them of the upcoming move and ask what YOU need to do to make sure you have all medically necessary information to hand carry through the move and resettlement.

Prepare your household. Notify the housing office or landlord of a TENTATIVE timeframe for the vacancy. Start clearing the junk out. Have a yard sale or visit the local thrift store. Donate to a shelter, Goodwill, the Salvation Army or the American Red Cross. Donate used books to the local library or shelter.

Prepare a list of places you would like to live in. This is a huge advantage to being on recruiting duty ... you can live virtually anywhere without restriction of installation location. Visit the homepage for the United States Army Recruiting Command (USAREC) to locate the brigade and/or battalion responsible for the area you would like to live in.

If possible, your servicemember should contact the battalion responsible for the area you would like to move to. This WILL NOT guarantee that s/he will get that location; however, it will be of aid in making a more productive "wish list" at the ARC. Please note that 10 companies throughout USAREC will be manned by civilian contract recruiters by the end of 2002. When contacting any wished for battalions, ask if any of their companies fall into this category and, if so, which towns are covered by the civilians.
