Opapa Railway History

1876 - Firstly the Railway line was continued South from Hastings and opened at Opapa (formerly called Te-Aute) this year.

1885 - Refreshment rooms were upgraded and the Post Office moved from the township to the Railway Station.

1886 - The ladies First Class waiting room was added

1895 - Te Aute railway station destroyed by fire

Railway station was replaced by Vogel Class 4 type station believed to be the former Hastings Railway Station.

1913 - Change of name to OPAPA because of confusion of names along the track.

1945 - Refreshment Rooms demolished - These were located at the North end of the Platform and housed separately from the main building.

1960~s - Saw the decline in rail traffic

1981 - Removal of Goods yards

1991 - Tablet control of the area ceased.

1994 - Three or four people took interest in the station and started clearing the area.

1996 - A group of interested people formed an Incorporated Society to preserve the Station and it`s environs - Called "Friends Of Opapa Railway Station".

1998 - Opapa Railway Station was repiled, more grounds cleared and a starrt on boundary fences.

1999 - Replacement of Fascia boards, Guttering, Rotting wall boards, plumbing, toilets and sink unit installed, as well as ground clearing.

2000 - Saw power being replaced to the station - this was removed in the early 1990`s . and power facilities being available at the station.
