Into the Woods: Spring 2001
Most recently I performed in a production of Stephen Sondheim's "Into the Woods". Sondheim's work is brilliant.
"Every word he writes has so much meaning." --Will Rogers Follies' Jeff Stern
"Into the Woods" is no exception. This musical is the stories of Little Red Ridinghood, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel, all connected by a Witch, a Mysterious Man, a Baker, and his wife. The show is performed in two acts. The first act are the stories that everybody knows, while incorporating the stories of the new characters mentioned, ending happily ever after. The second act is not for children. Sondheim uses politics, current events, and controversial metaphores here. There is death, mature language, and plenty of sex. "Into the Woods" goes quickly from becoming a lighthearted fairy tale, to a dark and serious drama. As many productions of this show do, I was cast as the one actor to play The Wolf, portrayed as a demonic pedophile, and Cinderella's Prince, the dashing, handsome, comic relief.

Hello..little girl. Hooooowwwwlll!!
The Prince pranced around on stage with a hobby horse. The audience seemed to fall in love with my galloping, and William Shatner voice I used while pursuing Cinderella.

I was raised to be charming..not sincere.
