VIVIAN Lai misses the sunshine. She has been cooped up in her Gleneagles Hospital suite since last Sunday and it is driving her nuts, she said. The actress was injured in a freak accident when a metal beam from a tent that collapsed struck her on the head. The collapse occurred during a freak storm at the carnival at Turf City, held to celebrate Cold Storage's 100th anniversary. Vivian, who plays youngest sister Rourou in Channel 8 drama Holland V, was one of the many stars at the carnival. The filming of the series was not affected as Vivian's scenes were already done, co-star Pierre Png told Chinese newspapers. Despite her longing for fresh air, she still feels too weak, Vivian said. She can't walk for too long as she feels giddy and gets a headache, she added. When The New Paper visited her last Tuesday, she had just returned after a short walk to stretch her legs. Talking about the mishap, Vivian said she was hit on the right side of her forehead. She lifted her fringe and sure enough there were a few small red scratches. Vivian's memory of what exactly happened is hazy. While the swelling on her forehead has gone down, her left cheek is still swollen. She also complains of backache and has dark circles around her eyes. Husband Alain Ong shares the angst. They have been married for barely two months. When The New Paper called Vivian at the hospital earlier in the day, Mr Ong answered the phone. Vivian had gone for a second round of X-rays at that time. Mr Ong didn't want to comment on the accident. The marketing manager has taken leave to take care of his wife. He pops home to feed the family dog when someone else is around to keep Vivian company. Her mother-in-law has been making soups and cooking for her, as Vivian is not used to the hospital food. Vivian's own parents were away in Taiwan when the accident happened, and for fear that they might worry, Vivian said she didn't reveal too much. ''They wanted to fly back right away, but I told them I was all right,' she said. But Vivian has no shortage of affection and attention from her friends and colleagues. Her room was full of bouquets, and there was a Hello Kitty doll - a gift from Nick Shen and Michelle Liow - on her side table. Vivian's handphone has also been ringing non-stop, with calls from concerned friends, but she is unable to chat for long, she said. When we visited, her manager, Mr Thomas Koh, was 'on duty', keeping her company. The two of them were nibbling tidbits and watching a Lilo & Stitch DVD Mr Koh had brought along with him. She said: 'Thank goodness I have so many people keeping me company, or I'll be so bored!' Tent collapsed after sudden storm A SUDDEN rainstorm disrupted Cold Storage's 100th Anniversary celebrations last Sunday. Vivian said: 'It was like a sudden typhoon.' Vivian recalled being hit by something metallic. She was taken to hospital by the Cold Storage staff members in a car. The carnival was graced by many stars such as actor Pierre Png, Hype Records' Artiste Network's Phyllis Quek, Michelle Saram and Rui En. According to the Artiste Network minder, everything was fine when the stars arrived. But they were told that exceptionally strong winds had caused the tent (right, behind stage), designated as the holding area for the stars, to collapse.
