| El Mundo review of Don Carlo in Teatro Real, Madrid. Rodrigo - Dmitri Hvorostovsky |
| Dmitri Hvorostovsky booed in Teatro Real, Madrid while performing Rodrigo, Marquis di Posa in Don Carlo Another version of this event suggests our visitor and eye-witness of the performance. "I was surprised when I read this and checked with a friend who went to Madrid. She was there on that night and is quite sure that he was not booed. What actually happened, and I am reliably informed, is that Dmitri sang the first section of Rodrigo's death song and in the pause between the first and the second part of the aria some of the audience started to clap. Another section of the audience started shouting at them in Spanish, telling them to shut up. They shouted back that they would clap whenever thay wanted to and there was an exchange of shouting and booing at each other. The players on stage just froze in position. Dmitri indicated to the conductor to get on with it and the aria re-started, which did not go down well with the group who had started the clapping and who clearly did not know what they were watching. The aria eneded with a much shorter ovation than normal. I am assured that at no point did the audience boo Dmitri. The friend who was there does have some grasp of Spanish language. I hope that this sets the record straight. Gaynor Davies" Thanks for your not being indifferent. All the opinions and corrections are welcome. |
