A western pleasure horse has a very
unique and recognizable carriage and movement. The horse must move very slowly, with a minimum
of leg movement at all gaits. They must carry their head low, level with their withers.
Horses should have a very slow rhythm and should look relaxed. They should change gaits,
circle, and change directions without increasing their speed or impulsion.
Western pleasure horses come from many breeds, although typically 'western' breeds are dominant.
These include quarter horses, paints, appaloosas, and crosses.
Riders should look relaxed, and be able to ride effectively while giving nearly invisible
cues. Unlike many western events, riders use both hands on the reins.
Many horses who excel at pleasure
have difficulty in other disciplines. Although many can do both english and western pleasure,
they do not usually compete in other sports.
