A trail class is meant to simulate the natural obstacles a horse might encounter while being trail ridden. The horse must calmly negotiate the obstacles without balking or refusing.

There are a number of different types of obstacles. One type is a bridge or similar object that must be walked across or stepped over. These objects are often meant to frighten or spook the horse.

The horse must be able to walk through a series of ground poles, walk through narrow or enclosed spaces and other potentially frightening obstacles. The horse should also be able to move laterally, and should be able to sidepass over a pole and sidestep around and obstacle.

Horses must also be able to negotiate gates. In order to pass through a gate, the horse must be able to pivot on both its hind legs and front legs. The horse must allow the rider to open the gate, then walk through and pivot to allow the rider to close the gate as well.
