There are halter classes for just about
every breed, including Quarter Horses, Paints, Thoroughbreds, Tennesse Walking Horses, Morgans,
Miniature Horses, Arabians, Saddlebreds, and just about every other breed.
Horses in halter classes must be absolutely fit, well muscled and immaculately groomed. They must
be well fitted in either a fancy halter or bridle, depending on the class. The horses are judged on
their conformation, usually how they compare with the ideal for the breed. They are judged on
their grooming and fitness, their manners and training, and the showing ability of the handler.
Horses must usually stand very still in a certain
position, either parked out with their hind legs well behind them, or perfectly square on all four
legs. They must not look around, whinny, shift their weight, swish their tail, or do anything that
horses would normally do.
Handlers, especially in showmanship classes, must do their best to present their horse perfectly
at all times, stand in the appropriate spot in relation to the judge, and also be well groomed and
clothed in the appropriate clothes for the class.
