Movie Reviews: Lost In Translation directed by Sofia Coppola

In the movie Lost In Translation directed by Sofia Coppolla, the viewer is taken on a blissful journey through the off beat setting of Tokyo, Japan. The main characters Bill Murray (Bob Harris)and relative newcomer Scarlett Johannson (Charlotte) develop a keen relationship that enlivens their mundane trip to Tokyo. The odd twosome haphazardly run into each other while staying at the same hotel. At first it seems odd that the two might become friends because of the opposite worlds that they come from, not to mention the contrast in their appearances. Their somber moods ,however, is what the two have most in common. Understanding that neither of their accomplishments will relieve their desire to have a meaningful existence, the two thinkers decide to use the other's company to offset their dreary moods. It's an odd pairing at first, but their relationship seems to pan out as an innocent and heartfelt romance. This element in itself is very austere by hollywood movie making standards in that the two never cross boundaries that might damper the moment and end their day dreamer intimacy. From here, the movie unravels into an enchanting modern approach to viewing the world amidst a backdrop that matters only as much as their relationship allows. The movie is reminiscent of vintage Katherine Hepburn and the wide-eyed glary classics of old. Lost in Translation is an all too charming odyssey into the realm of true artistry which is brilliantly portrayed.
