Krasnoyarsk -
my native town
HOME
Krasnoyarsk is situated in the center of Russia on the Yenissei River (one of the biggest rivers of the world, nearly 4000 km or 2500 miles). Krasnoyarsk is the administrative center of a huge region which stretches for 4000 km from north to south. About one million people live there.
The city of Krasnoyarsk appeared in1628 as a military fort. It defended the Russian settlements from nomads. The town was founded by the leader of cossacks Andrey Dubenski. He arrived with the detachment of cossacks to the confluence of the Kacha and Yenissei rivers.

Perhaps the name of the town originated from the word "beautiful": Krasnoyarsk ("Krasni Yar"). The old Russian word "krasni" had two meanings: "red" (the hills of Krasnoyarsk are made of red clay) and "beautiful", "Yar" is a high bank of the river.

Some information
about the history of Krasnoyarsk
The wooden settlement served as a fort for 100 years ever since 1628. Krasnoyarsk received the status of town in 1690 when Siberia was finally joined to Russia. A new stage in the development was connected with the formation of the Yenisseiskaya province in 1822. At the beginning of the 19th century gold was found in Krasnoyarsk Province. The Province became one of the biggest gold-mining centers in Russia. Merchants, craftsmen and owners of gold-mines reached Krasnoyarsk. The development of the town was also accelerated by the construction of the Transsiberian railway. The first train arrived to Krasnoyarsk on the 6th of December 1895. Thus a quiet Siberian town gradually turned into a big administrative center of Siberia.

Nowadays almost nothing is left from the old Krasnoyarsk. Only some buildings. Instead of it you see many storied houses where the people live which do not differ from each other :-(. But it would be not true to say that all buildings are alike. Of course, we have very skillfully constructed ones.
