8th Annual Father/Daughter Chili Cook-off

*Father or other significant adult in the girl's life

Oct. 21, 2007

2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Old Settlers Park Lakeview Pavilion

When the father/daughter dance attendance steadly decreased, the troop leaders and service unit members decided to start a new tradition. The father/daughter chili cook-off was born.

Dads and daughters create a chili recipe together. They also create table decorations to go with their chili. Many teams create themes and even dress for the part. We have consistantly had 15 to 20 chilies each year.

Judges for the chilies are recruited from our community. They brave the tasty to extremely hot and spicy chili. A few have been brought to tears as they saught water as soon as possible. Prizes are awarded in several categories and were donated by local businesses. This year's prize categories are:

  • Best Overall Chili and Presentation
  • Best Tasting Chili
  • Hottest/Spiciest Chili
  • Most Unique Chili
  • People's Choice Award

Three years ago we added carnival games to make the event a family affair. Troops in our service unit sponsor the games. Games have included ring toss, dart board, fishing, golf, face painting, a jail, cake walk, and change from year to year.

The Father/Daughter Chili Cook-off is the largest event we organize each year. It benefits our service unit and the Girl Scouts of Central Texas' Friends of Girl Scouting program. The Friends of Girl Scouting program provides financial aid for girls to attend Girl Scouting events.
