Top: The business of the Aerated Bread Company operated from premises located on the south side of Waymouth St, Adelaide, just a little east of Light Square. At first the ABC concentrated mostly on the production of bread and an extensive range of biscuits. By June 1868, however, they began to manufacture aerated waters using maugham's patent bottles.
The ABC continued to manufacture aerated waters until the late 1870s.
Bottom: James Monro was born in Inverness, Scotland on April 16, 1796. He arrived in Port Adelaide on the ship 'Superb' on Oct 13, 1839. He originally came out as an agricultural labourer, but as many of the early settlers did, he turned his hand to various occupations. He was listed as a grocer, shopkeeper, iron-monger, wine importer and also had an interest in hotels. In 1868 he began manufacturing aerated waters in Dale St, Port Adelaide.
In 1870 James was operating from premises in St. Vincent St, Port Adelaide. The business remained solvent and profitable until James sold out to Charles Downer in 1879 and retired from business. He died on April 14, 1885.
During his time in the aerated water business, James Monro used: Maugham's patent bottles; and three known varieties of tan and cream impressed stone ginger beers. |
