Selection of Riley Patent Bottles
c1918 to early 1920s.

The Riley Patent (internal thread bottle) was patented by it's inventor F.C. Riley in England in 1892.

(left) William Woodroofe who used the spinning top trade mark was the first manufacturer to introduce the patent to South Australia in 1905-1906.

The bottle featured is dated 1918 and was manufactured by the Melbourne Glass Bottle Works. Woodroofes traded until selling to Schweppes in the 1980s, products are still marketed using the Woodroofe name.
(middle) The riley embossed with the trade mark Lion belonged to the Lion Brewing and Malting Co Ltd, of Jerningham St, North Adelaide. The production of aerated waters commenced in 1892 and continued until 1970.

(right) Riley once belonging to Joseph Ladd (jnr) of Adelaide, Port and Gawler. The original Ladd company was commenced in Hindley St, Adelaide, by Joseph Onesimus Ladd in 1849. After J.O. Ladd died in June 1882, business continued under the direction of Ladd's widow - Caroline, who was well able to expand and direct business every bit as well as her late husband.

Joseph and Caroline had 13 children, so there was no problem keeping the business operating in family hands until finally ceasing operations in 1957.
