Next is Impressed J.O. LADD ADELAIDE. Once belonged to Joseph Onesimus Ladd of Rundle St, Adelaide, and dates 1860s. (One of numerous variations in impression, this particular one is old and very hard-to-get).
Lastly a two tone bottle impressed J.G. LEWIN N ADELAIDE. Once belonged to James Griggs Lewin of Ward St, North Adelaide. Dates late 1870s (This is the harder of three Lewin g/b variations).
This type of clay bottle was shaped on a potter's wheel and then fired in an oven at around 1300 degrees centigrade. This vitrified the clay making it impervious to fluids. |
