From around the mid 1850s, retailers of paste-like products for domestic use or consumption, found it convenient to market them in glazed stoneware pots.
The more ambitious retailers seized the opportunity of advertising their business using black & white and coloured underglazed lids.
The earliest underglazed printed pot lid would date around the 1840s and were still manufactured in England up until WW1 (1914-18.)
