Wares Bitter And Beverley Ales. c1890
The very attractive beer mugs first came to my attention in January 1983, when Brian Tuckwell and his digging companion Rohan Hoskin found six complete (but broken specimens).
There were two varieties, (the one featured) and another embossed "Wares Exchange Hotel."
They were mould made as the slab type seals are not actually applied by hand. They have a fairly plain handle on the opposite side to the seal.
The Exchange Hotel was located on the north side of Hindley Street, Adelaide, a few doors west of the King William St, corner. The Ware family purchased the Exchange in 1869. Family member Thomas Ware opened the Wares Torrenside Brewery at Hindmarsh in 1886.
The Ware family were pleased when they took a lot of prizes a year after opening at the 1887 Adelaide International Exhibition, and at the 1889 Paris Exhibition they took a silver medal which was an outstanding achievement against brewers throughout the world.
Ware's Torrenside Brewery was sold in 1898 to the Walkerville Brewing Company, after Tom Ware died in a drowning accident at Grange Beach in 1896.
There are about a handful of these advertising mugs found to date (2001) |
