HERRING & CO ADELAIDE
John Morris Herring, builder and licensee of the Union Hotel, Waymouth St, Adelaide, was in partnership with his eldest son Giles Head Herring in a ginger beer and aerated water factory which was established in 1840.
The factory was built by father and son, behind the Union Hotel.
From 1848 to 1849, John and Giles Herring took a partner named Thomas Cannon Potts into their business and operated as "Herring & Co" Adelaide (Giles Herring married Pott's daughter.)
Herring & Co used bottles made by a free settler named Thomas Field, b. 1815 and formerly of Barnett, north of London, where he learnt the pottery trade.
Field arrived in Sydney in 1842, and soon established a pottery.
Herring's bottles made by T. Field are simple, but well made, in comparison to others made by other potters around the same time.
This is an extemely rare bottle with only about 5 specimens known. |
