G.H. HERRING ADELAIDE 1840
Giles Head Herring b. 1820 in England was the eldest son of John Morris Herring. Before arriving in South Australia in Dec 1839, both father and son followed their trade as builders in London.
John and Giles Herring built the Union Hotel in Waymouth St, Adelaide, and also a ginger beer brewery, stables, and other sundry structures at the rear of the hotel.
John took on the license of the Union hotel, whilst Giles ran the aerated water and ginger beer brewery until 1870.
The 1840 date featured on the bottle, refers to the dual estabishment of Herring;s business, and that of the bottle maker George Shearing of the Hindmarsh based pottery.
Shearing ran a very important colonial industry only a few miles from Adelaide.
The Hindmarsh pottery produced large quantities of drain pipes, bricks, and a creditable range of high quality salt glazed wares which included: Bung jars, demijohns, wine jars, water filters, ink bottles, ginger beer bottles, bread crocks and bowls.
There are about 5 individual bottles (as featured) and are recognised as true colonial treasures and have a likely manufacture date around the late 1850s onwards. |
