William Christie Buik was born in Dundee, Scotland, May 3, 1824.
In April 1849, Buik arrived at Port Adelaide on the ship "Coromandle." He had been employed in London by R. Whyte & Company, and came to South Australia as a representative and partner in the company. Buik ran the business of Messrs. Whyte & Co in Hindley Street, Adelaide, until 1856. He then commenced his own business as Ironmonger and Importer, selling household wares and running a furniture emporium. It was during this period of time that Buik was thought to have introduced his range of promotional stoneware products, such as ginger beer bottles, demi-johns, jars and plates. Buik served a term as Lord Mayor of Adelaide, and later of Kensington.
