The firm of G. Hall & Sons Ltd was founded by George Hall in 1851 from modest manufacturing premises at Dudley Rd, Marryatville. His early brew of ginger beer was sold to customers in nearby suburbs, delivery was achieved with the aid of a hand truck. His ginger beer and soda water being found popular and with increasing demand, made it necessary to move to larger premises. In 1872, George, with sons Henry, James, Thomas, and Edward, moved to Edward St, Norwood, where they purchased the property owned by Mr. Mayhew, a soap and candle manufacturer. The site contained a factory and dwelling, which was used until 1926, when it was demolished to make room for a larger factory. The sons promoted the business throughout the state and travelled to England America to keep abreast of manufacturing ideas. They developed the company to be one of the largest of its kind in the state. James Hall became the first chairman of the private limited company formed by the family in 1938. In October 1961, the firm of G. Hall & Sons Ltd, who had so successfully remained a private family enterprise went public with issue of shares. An industry journal dated March 1970, stated that Hall's were owned by more than 1,200 shareholders, of whom 95 per cent were South Australians. Things changed: A sad 'Colin Hall' the last charman and managing director - witnessed the successful takeover bid for Halls, by the Coca-Cola company in 1972. The Norwood operation was closed soon after with Hall's employee's finding work at Coke's Port Road, Southwark, facility. Colin Hall took on the Managing Directors position with Coke for quite a few years, retiring around 1989. |
