The Compassionate Response to HIV/AIDS

RAIN's MISSION Statement

To provide a compassionate response to HIV/AIDS through education and service.

VISION

To Expand Services Geographically, Increase Diversity Throughout the Organization, Explore Flexible Models of Service, Increase Community Awareness of HIV/AIDS and Develop Effective Educational Processes for RAIN Clients, Volunteers, Staff and Board (adopted Nov. 17, 1998)

RAIN is a statewide service organization which provides volunteer-based services for persons living with AIDS (PLWAs) and educational programs about HIV/AIDS to the community at large.

HIV/AIDS education is provided in school systems and workplace settings, as well as presentations to congregational and community groups. RAIN Coordinators in Oklahoma City and Tulsa are certified to teach the "HIV in the workplace curriculum.

RAIN recruits, trains, and supervises volunteer RAIN Teams for persons living with AIDS (PLWAs). Many are volunteers through participating congregations and faith-based groups(Membership in a faith community is not a prerequisite). RAIN Teams allow persons living with HIV/AIDS to maintain independence longer. RAIN Teams are a means of practical support, not full-time technical nursing care.

What is a RAIN Team?

RAIN teams consist of volunteers who provide compassionate and non-judgmental practical support to people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWAs). Support from RAIN teams allows PLWAs to remain in their homes longer, thus enhancing their quality of life. There is no charge to a PLWA for a RAIN Team.

Comprehensive training is provided to volunteers, as well as workshops and updates to keep volunteers informed about HIV/AIDS information and resources. RAIN volunteers are supported by a network of staff, clergy, and professional facilitators.

Though most RAIN Teams are sponsored by a faith community, RAIN staff and volunteers DO NOT preach, proselytize or attempt to re-church their clients.

What does a RAIN Team do?

RAIN Teams provide a compassionate response to persons living with AIDS. This response is based on the individual's needs/requests, and volunteer skills, interests and availabilities. Services may include:

  • Meal preparation
  • Light housekeeping
  • Transportation assistance
  • Shopping
  • Social outings
  • Child care
  • Lawn care
  • Visiting and emotional support

There is no minimum time requirement.
