History
The Ohio Women’s Crew team unofficially started in 1995 simply as Ohio Crew. Founded by James Wamsley and Ben Stromer, the team was co-ed and grew very quickly. In 1997 the teams mutually decided to split into a men’s and women’s team and Ohio University Women’s Crew was formed, ensuring that competitive rowing would be available to women on the Athens campus.

The team is a club sport, yet almost always competes on the Varsity level. An advantage of being a club sport is that we are completely self governed. Elections are held once year where teammates pick whom they want to lead.
The team has always believed that competing on a regional and national level is important. The Women’s team has competed in the Head of the Charles Regatta, held in Boston, Massachusetts on the Charles River and in the Dad Vail Regatta, held on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, numerous times over the years To get better we simply feel we must compete against the best.
For almost a decade now you can find the crew team every morning during competitive season at Stroud’s Run State Park. We practice on the beautiful Dow Lake at 6:00am, dodging the geese that are not afraid of our oars.
Many women have passed through the ranks of Ohio Women’s crew and each has left something behind for those that follow. We have survived a rollercoaster of ups and downs, and the team has always made it though because the women on it were dreamers. As Jim Dietz, USCGA rowing coach once said, “Rowing is a sport for dreamers. As long as you put in the work you can own the dream.” This team is the realization of so many dreams.
Last year in an effort to keep in contact with our alumnae the Alumnae Association was formed. It started out small, but continues to grow. Currently there is a quarterly newsletter that is sent out, updating the alumnae on our season and current crew. We hope to for the alumnae base to grow and to incorporate activities.

2007...
The team has always had survived the best it could with the resources it had. Currently our roster is bigger than it has ever been and our resources are being stretched to their limits. We plan to continue to grow with help from knowledgeable coaches and donations from those that share our dream and love of rowing.
