OUR YEARS IN RETROSPECT
Our 25th Anniversary was celebrated in 1937 at the Kirkwood Presbyterian Church. Members presented their birthday pennies for an entry fee, while visitors paid sixty cents ($.60) Out of two hundred eighty five members (285), two hundred twenty five (225) were present to celebrate. Silver bon-bon spoons were presented as souvenirs. The Brothers sang to the Sisters: Whats the matter with sisters, theyre all right, they curl their hair for meeting nights and the rest of the week they are a sight. Whats the matter with brothers, theyre all right and where are they on our meeting night? Theyre out of sight! Whats the matter with brothers, theyre all right..
The Chapter pledged two hundred dollars ($200.00) in 1939 for new Lodge Room chairs.
A minstrel show was held in 1940 and the Chapter gave two hundred dollars ($200.00) for an automatic drinking fountain. White Castle donated hamburgers and apple pies for our card party.
Our Sister Sue Peterson was appointed as Grand Representative of British Columbia and Brother Ralph Davis was introduced as the District Deputy Grand Lecturer of the 57th District.
During a city-wide blackout in 1942, we had to have blackout shades or no lights during 1942. The Chapter sold over five hundred (500) recipe books. Defense bonds were also purchased. Brother and Sister Palm donated a piano for the O.E.S. Room at Fort Leonard Wood. Did you know we had a room there?
1943 found us still buying defense bonds, and also ambulances. Coffee stamps were shared by the members to provide coffee when we served it at our meetings. Our Worthy Matron had two services stars on her window signifying family in the military, and she as well as many other Sisters went to work to help in the war effort. The Chapter grew by twenty-five (25) new members.
War bonds were still being purchased in 1945. Some fifty (50) tons of clothing was collected for the War Relief. Can you imagine the cost to send that amount these days?
We purchased new Jewels for the newly formed DeMolay Chapter in 1946 and our kitchen was remodeled.
Mary Keevil was appointed as District Deputy Grand Matron in 1947. Harmony Club purchased forty-eight (48) new card tables this year and the Chapter gave Kirkwood Lodge five hundred dollars ($500.00) for painting the Lodge Hall. This was also the year that we got the new cart for our dishes.
The cloak room and Jobies room was redecorated in 1949. The Chapter donated one hundred dollars ($100.00) to purchase the new organ, and we also purchased a membership certificate to the Shriners Hospital.
