BooksPrevious Reads and what I thought of them. The Chrysalids by John Wyndhamn
This book was the best and I finally got a copy from my friend. She's the greatest! This book is set in the future and it is about what has happened to the world after a nuclear bomb. No one knows that is what has happened though. They think that god has reigned down his terror and turned the evil things into "the deviants" which are people or things (like trees, plants and horses) that are deformed from radiation. They cast these people into the wilds of the land and they live in poverty and die horrible deaths. So anyways, it focuses on these three kids that live in a small community. They are telapathic but no one knows. If the people find out then children will be sent to the outskirtswhere all the deviants live. It is really good. Trust me. Lord Jim by Joseph ConradYup its a weird classic. This is the story of a man who aspires to be a great sailor but ends up in the jungle and is the "big man on campus' there. It is a kinda freaky story and it jumps in its time frames. Alot of his stories are like that and uyou really have to pay attention when you are reading it. It made me think alot but I liked it.Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
I know, another one by joseph conrad but I have grown to like his work. This is about a man -- another sailor epique -- well he isn't really a sailor but he is on boats alot(for most of the book I think) Anyways he aspires to be the greatest ivory collector in the business. This guy is his, and everybody else's, hero and idol. The guy has to go way down into the deep jungle and get the man who is his idol and bring him back. The whole time he is thinking of what it will be like to finally meet him. A string of dangerous things happen to him and his crew and when he finally gets there it is not at all what he expected. A tedious read at times but at the end it kinda made me think about a few things. (one of which was how the book, that was utimatly boring, somehow kept my attention)
Jude The Obscure By Thomas Hardy
This book I really liked. It kept my attention alot. I mean I was mad when I didn't get my usual time to finish reading it. It is about this guy Jude Fawley and his whole life. He grows up living with his aunt because his parents die and no one wants to take care of him. It is all about his life and his fatal relationship with his beautiful cousin Sue. It was written in true Thomas Hardy style, dark and pessimistic but it was a great book.
The Catcher in the Rye. By J.D SalingerThis was a pretty good book. It kept my interest defininalty and it had a quality about it that said that there was more to the story than what the boy was actually telling you. Its definatly a book where you read betweeen the lines. Its about this rich kid who keeps getting kicked out of all of these private big name schools. He thinks that it is all a joke and that people are always acting fake. They don't do what they want to do, instead they sell out to make money. Anyways he leaves school (because he gets kicked out) and has a semi eventful couple of days where he explores his options on his life and whether or not he is going to go off on his own. I am not going to tell you the exactly what happens cause I am not into ruining the book for people but it has a twist to it!Bodily Harm by Margaret Atwood. This book was interesting but the most interesting part was the ending. It was an ending that left you guessing. It was my favorite part. It is about this woman who has recently undergone surgery for breast cancer. She feels like part of her is missing -- not just physically. She has had two revently bad relationships with men, one of whom was her doctor for the surgery. Anyways, she is a travel writer for a magazine and she gets sent to do a travel piece cause she is stressed and her boss figures that sending her to do this will be just the thing. She gets there and unbeknownst to her she arrives at the beginning of a revolution. It gets super interesting after that and the book is another one that kept my attention. I definatly recommend it. A really good read for those who are into the semi stwisted world that Atwood usually takes you into. Don't read if if you are a person who requires a definate ending to your stories. The Gazebo by Emily GraysonThis was a good book but again one that if you are looking for the regular happy ending don't read this book. But it is a beautiful love story. This is the story of a rich boy and a common girl who fall in love against thier parents wishes. It makes you want to sigh alot. Sappy yet good. I recommend it if you need a romance fix.Dracula by Bram StokerAs I said on my page before, this book was good, with a "But". Did no one notice the forced ending in this book when they proclaimed it a classic? People should have been warned. But the rest of the book is good. Although if you are looking for the romance portrayed in the movies, this is not the book for you. And dracula? yeah he is super ugly, just a warning to those looking for Gary Oldman![]() Currently reading: "The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams
