The dogs are never allowed to be loose in the rooms where the cats are until a week after they quit barking at the cats. This does not mean the dogs are locked in dog crates for weeks at a time. They too have their time in the home. But when the dog is out of the crate, the cats are locked in a separate room of the house. During this period of time that the dog spends in the crate he is acclimated to a muzzle. The muzzle is on long enough over the two week period that it becomes second nature for the dog. Its not necessary to spend a lot of money on muzzles, the plastic Jafco muzzles are inexpensive and work just fine. In the beginning it's important to learn to put them on properly or the dog may get them off and chew them up when you are not watching. When the day comes to allow the dog to be loose in the rooms with the cats it is important to do this while the dog is in a muzzle. He should also be wearing a prong collar with a 2-foot length of line (that allows you to grab the leash if need be. )When allowed out of the crate, should the dog show the slightest sign of aggression towards the cats you need to correct them so severely that they think their life is about to end. Dogs instinctively accept the pack leader (YOU) and the individual who says who can fight and when they can fight. So if you have established your rank through obedience training and doing all of the right things that make you the pack leader, they will relate to what you are telling them not to do. At some point in time the muzzle must come off. This should only happen when you are comfortable with the actions of your dog when the cats are around. You must have patience.
