The Girls and Boys Town was originally founded in the District of Columbia by Father Edward Flanagan in 1971. Girls and Boys Town has a 90-year history of serving severely at-risk, abused, abandoned, and neglected children. The organization in America's largest privately funded nonprofit, nonsectarian organization providing children with a safe, caring, living environment. In 2006, the organization assisted 1,231 children and 225 families in receiving help, healing and hope from Girls and Boys Town of Southern California's Residential Services, Short-Term Residential Services, and Family Based Services. Another 50,071 children and families in the state of California were indirectly assisted through the Girls and Boys Town National Hotline and through outreach and professional training programs.

In 1994, the organization opened five long-term residential homes located on 80 acres in Trabuco Canyon in Orange County.
Tilly's Baby Home in June 2005 and is a baby shelter for "sibling sets" of children from 0 to 6 years old. Thanks to the generous support of Tilly's, the facility provides a loving, family-style environment for young brothers and sisters who have been removed from their homes. A second Baby Home will be opening in the end of 2007/beginning of 2008.
