Photo 1: The Melbourne Cup
There are lots of New Zealand horses in this famous Australian race and many workplaces have sweepstakes to bet on the first, second and third place winners.

Photo 2: Fireworks on Guy Fawkes night.
From the end of October you can buy fireworks with sky rockets, sparklers, flares and other fireworks and let them off in your backyard. Children love to light sparklers and flares. Kiwis usually have a barbecue and sometimes a bonfire
close to the weekend before or on Guy Fawkes Night to celebrate this special day.

Photos 3 and 4: Auckland Santa Parade
This famous parade is at the end of the month in Queen St. It marks the start of the Christmas shopping season.
There are floats, clowns, pipe bands (photo 3) and of course Santa Claus (Father Christmas) in red with his reindeer and helpers!

Photo 5: Back to the beach
It is time to go back to the beach and have fun!
Here are some friends doing the monkey walk on the sand at Te Henga Beach on the west coast of Auckland.
The surf is a little dangerous for swimming but it is great to have a splash in! The sand is black because there is a lot of iron in it and it shines and sparkles in the sun.

Food

picture 6 picture 7
6. Strawberries.
7. Asparagus.

Photo 6: Strawberries in a chip and in punnets
Strawberries are delicious and cheaper now so buy and eat them quickly because the season is short and the price goes up closer to Christmas.
Chips (the name of the container at the top) are usually more expensive than punnets ( the name of the other two containers.)

Photo 7: Asparagus

This vegetable is available fresh now and at its cheapest. Enjoy it raw in salads, lightly boiled or in Chinese style stir fry.
