Interview questions

Ed) So what are the waves like down in Christchurch?
Aaron) Locally its a bit inconsistent but when its on, its as good as any where in the world. There are heaps of good breaks within a couple of hours drive of Ch-Ch. We do alot of travelling down here.

Ed) What is the bodyboard scene like down there?
Aaron) Huge and growing all the time. There are alot of good riders down here in Ch-Ch.  In Greymouth there are more lidders than surfers.

Ed) Most of the contest in the South Island are run with the Stand-up comps, how well does that work?
Aaron) It works great. We get to see the stand ups ripping and they get to see us ripping. There dosn't seem to be the same antagonism between surfers and bodyboarders down here.

Ed) How cold does it get down there and what sort of wetties do you wear?
Aaron) Summer = 3/2 and spring suits
Winter = 5/3 helmet gloves and booties. It gets real cold (water temp 7 degrees) but the surf pumps and there's no crowds

Ed) You drove up to the Nationals at Mahia in a camper van, what was the trip like?
Aaron) A great trip. The campa goes off. We've done sooo many trips around New Zealand in the campa and it never lets us down. Its the only way to travel, abit slow but whats the hurry.

Ed) What are your opinions on the NZ bodyboard scene at the moment?
Aaron) Bodyboarding in New Zealand is set to explode. The level of riding is getting better and better. I think we are lacking  experience and have a need for more leaders. At the moment all organisation and administration is being done by only a handful of guys. They're doing a great job but its alot of work and the more help the better. The average age of bodyboarders in this country is very young (under 20). I think as more of these guys grow older and gain various skills, then the sport and the industry will really begin to take off.

Ed) You run a bodyboard club in Christchurch, how is that going?
Aaron) We don't actually have a Bodyboard club in Ch-Ch. Most boadyboardrs are members of Surfriding clubs. Through my business ( Surf and Bodyboard coaching) and my involvement in Scholastic surfing and bodyboarding I manage to keep in touch with most riders to keep them informed of whats going on.

Ed) Anything else you would like to add?
Aaron) Don't waste a good section by doing a spin. Launch.
