The Statue of Liberty
No one can visit NYC and not see one of the most awesome sights in the world, standing at 305ft the Statue of Liberty dominates the New York harbour. Situated on Liberty Island you get there via the ferry from Battery Park.,  it's best to get there early as queues build up quickly. Tickets can be purchased from Castle Clinton which is situated in the grounds of Battery Park itself. Also included in the ferry price is entry to Ellis Island, this was the immigration depot for the country right up to 1954, the main building has been restored to its former glory now serving as a museum and well worth a look.
Fancy a helicopter ride round the Island ?  These depart from the Downtown Heliport at Pier 6, it's best to pre book these through your Concierge at your Hotel to save waiting around but you can just turn up if you so wish.  The flight covers all the major sights and is a great photo opportunity. more info
The Empire State Building
Opened in 1931, situated on 5th Avenue, this is still the most famous skyscrapper in the world and the tallest building in NY. The observation deck on the 86th floor is outdoors and can get very windy but is still a must.see especially at sunset. more info
South Street Seaport
Situated just a few blocks from the South Ferry is the Seaport, this restored part of the area  offers a variety of a Fish Market,  shops, bars, restaurants, boat trips and a museum. Take a Riverboat Cruiseup the river taking in the Brooklyn and  Manhattan bridges,  Statue of Liberty plus amazing photo opportunities of the Manhattan skyline.
Central Park
What a better way to spend a  Sunday afternoon than in peaceful surroundings, you wouldn't believe you were still in the city. The park is half a mile wide and two and a half miles long.Inside you will find tennis courts, entertainers, skaters ( you can hire skates if you wish )  visit Strawberry Fields, Yoko Ono's peace garden to John Lennon,  or just stroll around watching the  joggers. This is where New Yorkers go to chill out so go along and join em !
Museums
Many of the cities Museums are grouped together between 89th & 92nd off 5th Avenue. Check your City Guide for whats on where as exhibits can change, however there are many others including the Guggenheim ( 575 Broadway )  more info

 Make sure you make time for  the Intrepid Air Sea Museum set on an Aircraft Carrier  it contains examples of vintage and modern day Air, Sea and Space transport, they even have a nuclear Sub and Battleship. ( One for the boys I think! ) more info

Brooklyn Bridge - Have a walk on one of the most filmed bridges in the world
United Nations, 1st Ave at 46th - The site is not on US territory,  it's in an  International zone with it's own stamps and Post Office. Guided tours take you round the various chambers and the General Assembly room.  
New York Stock Exchange,  Wall Street. - Watch the trading from the Visitors gallery.
Castle Clinton National Monument - Battery Park
Carnegie Hall,  154 W 57th St - NYs first concert hall opened in 1891
Grand Central Terminal,  E 42nd at Park Ave - awesome !
Radio City Music Hall, 1260 Sixth Ave - Take the tour and meet the Rockette dancers.
Madison Square Gardens,  4 Pennsylvania Plaza - Huge indoor sporting arena famous for hosting boxing,  Ice Hockey and home for the New York Knicks basketball team.
Rockefeller Center, 47th-51st St between Fifth & Sixth - Outdoor Ice Skating, Shopping and Dining. The General Electric building is a marvel when lit up at night.
There is so much to see in the city, the best way to get round is to simply walk and use the subway to get to longer distances. The subway is perfectly safe to use, you need to purchase tokens to travel or get a Metrocard ( see travel information ) Cabs are cheap but you could spend a lot of time in traffic especially during rush hour.
If time is not on your side it may be worth taking a tour on an open topped London Bus. Tours cover the whole city and cover all the major attractions,  the good thing is that you can hop on and off as you like. Check with your hotel concierge as to where the nearest starting point is. more info

Times Square
You need to go here twice, during the day and again at night to really soak up the atmoshere. Packed with theatres, shops, hotels this place is heaving with people during the day, by night, well you just need to be there !  
Greenwich Village
Full of bookstores and old time bars this is where students from the University of New York hang out. This is another area to check out both day and night.  Chill out in Washington Square by day and at night look out for the late night coffee houses, theatres,  music clubs and some of the best jazz venues around.
If you need any help just pop into the NY Visitors Information Center, it features free brochures, discount coupons to attractions and touch screen electronic information kiosks. The center is open Mon - Fri 8.30-6.00 and Sat/Sun 9.00-5.00 and can be found at 810 Seventh Avenue/ 53rd.
