Polo Grounds Shuttle Page

On Saturday, August 3, 1974, I went on a walking tour of the remains of the Polo Grounds Shuttle, which was abandoned in 1958. With me, were Joe Beim, Ed Crew, Vince Reiner, Howie (last name unknown), and our tourguide, Stephen R. Zabel. All photos taken that day were taken by Joe Beim.

We got off the 4-Train at Yankee Stadium, walked past Yankee Stadium, which was under construction for its renovation at the time. The Yankees played all their 1974 and 1975 home games at Shea.

The first stop on our walking tour was the Sedgewick Ave. station, located under the Major Deegan Expressway at 162nd St. Two concrete platforms, the roadbed and the tunnel entrance remain. The tunnel entrance was tinned over. All that is left of this station is the bare concrete. The tracks and station fittings, signs and railings long gone.

After exploring and photographing, we walked to Anderson Ave. and 162nd St., the site of the Jerome-Anderson station. This is on the other side of the tunnel. Climbing up to platform level, we did more exploring and photographing. We found pretty much the same here as at Sedgewick Ave. Bare concrete, no tracks or station fittings.

Below are some photographs of the Polo Grounds Shuttle. One in service with a 2-car train of Flivvers at 155th St., another of the 2-car train in service at Sedgewick Ave. A 1963 photo of the abandoned Jerome-Anderson station shows the concrete viaduct that half the station platform rested on. This has since been removed, and was not there in 1974.
